From birth, native San Franciscans know about the Fog. They know about summer in the City, how cold it is and how much the fog is part of the City's summer. So, of course, summer in the City was all about getting out of the City-anywhere out there.
So, going to the Fog Belt today was to approach a known situation, especially at The Legion of Honor(Honneur), our decidedly French replica of a museum. The Impressionists were on display, again.
Much of the art came from the National Gallery in Washington ,DC, part of the Mellon collection gifted years ago by Paul and his sister, Aisla, children of Andrew Mellon, the banker. All the usual suspects were included: Manet, Pissarro, Gauguin, Sisley, Cezanne, and Renoir. One never tires of their art.
To complete the effort, our next stop was the nearby De Young Museum, where an exhibition of the Weisel Collection of Native American artifacts was on display. It included textiles(serapes and chief blankets), pottery, and carvings-masks and rattles. The weavings were from the mid-19th century- 1840-1865. The simple forms incorporated combined with the vivid dyes to give the different pieces distinct appearances.
The museums were experiencing a midweek lull, with most galleries hardly crowded, and few tourists were in evidence. I did meet a mother and daughter from Peru who knew about the special exhibition and made a point to visit. Good for them.
On the way home, we drove through Sausalito- Look out for bicycle riders. They were everywhere, as thick as flies, except these folks were all over the road, oblivious to through traffic. Downtown was no better, with even more riders on both side of the street. Now this is a summer scene. I'm sure the locals appreciate the traffic=$$$$$$$$$!
No fog in Sausalito.
