Book Review: DARK STAR, by Alan Furst, pub. 2002 by Random House

Author Alan Furst has been enjoying a successful run as a writer of spy thriller novels for almost 20 years.  He has published 13 novels, most recently in June of 2014, his 13th.  He has focused on that period that fascinates historians to this time: 1930-1940, the inter war period.   In Europe, it was a time of foreboding: Hitler's Germany was rearming, building a new war  machine, and even worse: enacting laws aimed at driving the Jews from Germany.  Russia was a player with Josef Stalin negotiating with Hitler on potential booty from client states taken over in the run up to war.
Furst captures the moment in Dark Star with a protagonist with the perfect cover: an internationally recognized writer/reporter with an interesting pedigree: a Polish Jew who is a Russian citizen on assignment in Paris to spy for the NKVD and provide information on Nazi capabilities and armaments.
The scene changes from Paris to Berlin to Moscow with the occasional side trip across the fields of Poland.  He focuses this novel on the last months before war breaks out, and includes the earliest moments of the beginning when Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939.  The trials and travails of Szara', the protagonist, keep the reader turning pages as he weaves his way through the chaos created by war and its shadow war behind the scenes as NKVD operatives continue to thin the ranks of Soviet spies on orders of the Kremlin.  Furst ties in historical fact with a great story that features many interesting moments for our writer/spy.  Furst knows the territory of Europe having lived in Paris for 20 years.  He now lives in the USA, in New York.
I will definitely be reading more of Furst's work, especially his best seller:  The Foreign Correspondent.
Rating: ****1/2

The Autry National Center: Los Angeles

While running around LA last weekend, the Mayor had occasion to stop at a well known museum in the heart of town.  The Greatest Generation, those who lived during WW II and participated in defeating fascism, knew the singing cowboy: Gene Autry.   Mr. Autry had fame and fortune bestowed on him as a result of starring roles in that Hollywood fave- the Western.
Mostly shot in black and white, the cowboys chased stagecoach bandits, cattle rustlers, saloon toughs, and more than a few "redskins", aka Indians, aka Sioux, Apache, Comanche, etc.  The heroes wore white(beige) hats, the bad guys black hats(and black shirts, pants, bandanas).  Gene Autry had matinee idol good looks, a decent singing voice, could strum a guitar, and ride a horse without falling off; a successful combination in prewar Hollywood.
Mr. Autry was also an astute businessman with sharp intellect and good timing, he was able to amass quite a fortune during his lifetime, most of which came from real estate investments in southern California.  Early on in his career, he collected art and artifacts from the American west: native American tribal artifacts and utilitarian objects unique to tribe and territory.   Recognizing the sharp decline of native cultures in the West, he made a special effort to preserve the rich history of the indigenous peoples as told through their own art.  Finally, he put his collection together in the Autry Museum of the American West.   What a treasure!
It is now called the Autry National Center as it has merged with other institutions that were similar in goals.   The beautiful building that houses portions of the collection is set against the Santa Monic mountains in Los Angeles.   Most recently the museum featured an exhibition dedicated to Highway 66 or Route 66 as it was often called.   Built to connect Chicago with the west coast, the highway followed a track that led directly to LA, passing through the Great Plains, the Rocky Mountains, the Painted Desert, and finally to the Golden State.   All along the route were little hotels and restaurants that sprung up out of the sand to provide travelers with all their needs: food, rest stops, water, maps, directions, medicines, and of course, gasoline for their vehicles.  Americans traveled by car now; horses gone forever.   Photos taken alone the route provided a glimpse of Americana as the population moved westward in huge numbers to the land of palm trees, orange groves, and a shimmering sea(surfing came later).   It is a well done show.
Also on display is an exhibition of Native American beadwork that includes clothing and other objects used by tribes across the country.
This museum is a must see for anyone interested in American art and history.

Lake Tahoe: Cover Girl

It seems that photos of Lake Tahoe grace the covers of American magazines more than ever.  It must be that editors know that an edition with a picture of crystal clear waters framed by majestic mountains inspires viewers and they reach for the photo, unconsciously hoping to find the same tranquility among its pages.
On the racks, currently, is SUNSET, the venerable magazine of the West.  While the East swelters in the summer heat and humidity, the West Coast basks in serenely dry, cool air bestowed on California by the Pacific Ocean's Humboldt current: the river of offshore water that descends from Alaska bringing low temperatures that modify the summer's heat.
Off Japan, it's known as the Kuroshio Current and heads north.  The earth's rotation bends it at the Aleution Islands and sends it south to California.  How nice, how lucky we are to live in California.
So, my fellow Tahomans, enjoy the remaining weeks (3) of summer.  Enjoy our lake, buy the magazine just for the photo-the article was a little light.   The long weekend of Labor Day is half over: be safe, stay sober, drive home early to avoid the traffic jam.

Mayor's Retreat

The Mayor is on Official Retreat this week on the California coast.  After a quick trip to the south land to discuss updates with the Minister of Manufacturing and Avaition, it was off to the meditation Center in Muir Beach.
It's not the best time there: a major upgrade is in progress, but, despite the turmoil, things are going well.   Why just today, I joined a conference with 2 Russian lawyers: Sergei and Alexandre(Sacha) who were on location for the first time.   We discussed the fine points of Moscow(Moskova) and the Oblast of Sakahlin.  The island off the east coast, north of the Kuriles is a hot topic now, especially in light of recent events.
No doubt President Putin is discussing the island as we speak.  The 2 young Russians seemed to be enjoying the local scene but were not quite ready to jump into the boiling surf and try their luck with the local surfing community which was very well represented today(waves 6'-8').
The mayor will be back in the office on Monday.
Stay tuned.

Terramoto in California

Well, when you live in earthquake country, you get earthquakes.  And, Sunday morning, there was a good one: 6.0 on the Richter Scale.  The epicenter was located at the southern end of the Napa Valley, the premier grape growing valley of the USA.  Damage was extensive in the city of Napa, but, fortunately, relatively few injuries.  32 buildings were red tagged as uninhabitable, and scores more yellow tagged(repairable).
Wineries suffered small amounts of damage, but the 2014 crop is still on the vine, harvest being about a month away.   Tourists and wine drinkers waited until late morning before cancelling excursions to the famed valley's wine shops.  Some after shocks continue to rumble through the area.
Earthquake country- a living legend.

Mayor Reaches Out to Russian Dissident

The Mayor's Office has extended an invitation to a member of the notorious rock group PUSSY RIOT.  Her agent who handles speaking engagements promises to return a call asap.   We hope Nadya Tolokonikova will be available before the serious winter snows take hold in the Sierra.   We will keep the info updated as we find out schedules, etc.
Nadya was quoted only today after a group raised the flag of Ukraine on a 30 story icon building in downtown Moscow.   The flag raisers were alleged to have scaled the building then, after the installation and unfurling, they parachuted down to the street, unhurt.    The large blue and yellow banner displayed a large message to Mad Vlad and his cronies as the truck convoy on the border with Russia was halted for inspection and control by Ukrainian military forces in the customs zone.  The Red Cross assured the government in Kiev that the contents of each vehicle would be carefully inspected before being allowed to proceed.

Minister Announces Lateral Move

The Mayor's office received a text notice of intent to transfer.  Our Minister of Latin American Affairs has decided to move to a larger pond with the US Dept. of State.  His appointment as an FSO will probably occur around December 1 or January 1, 2015.
This is good news.  He will probably continue to wear the hat of our man down south, but he will also wear a new hat: TBD.  Of course, our info stream from Foggy Bottom will vastly improve.  This will serve to help all Tahomans stay on top of world events even in the most obscure locations.  Updates as they happen.
Our Minister has arrived home in DC after an exhausting trip to the Chinese mainland.   We are pleased to hear of his safe arrival back on US soil.  The trip left him with a URI, but it does not seem to be serious.

Ferguson, Missouri

The issue of deadly force by urban police is the broader issue in Missouri and the rest of the USA.  This issue is one of many that have received attention in the press.   Much of this is related to the militarization of local police forces at the behest of the federal government.  Chiefly, the spread of military hardware has created  the situation where local police believe they are part of the global war on terrorism.  Sad but true; but that is the direct result of the mindset formation that creates the impression that all police are now soldiers.
This is not a good thing.  Not good for the police, not good for the people who live in any city or town so affected.   The weaponry alone induces feelings of dominant power, which, unchecked, widens the divide between the local population and the police.   Opinion in the media have expressed the belief that it is time to restrain the spread of federal influence at the local level.  It is not necessary nor wanted.  Not here or in major cities across the country.
Eric Holder, US Attorney General, announced a federal investigation into events surrounding the shooting of the 18 year old unarmed resident of the city in Missouri.  The National Guard has been deployed to control demonstrations and restore order.

Report from Shanghai

Our very own Minister of Latin American Affairs has returned safely from his first venture into modern China.   His 10 day excursion went well, and, aside from some serious jet lag, he is well and happy back in DC.
A full report will be made later this week after he assembles his notes and reflections on the entire experience.   We know he met with various cultural representatives and discussed such topics as environmental pollution control; defense positions; the Vietnamese border problem; the Phillipine Island fishing issue; and of course, US trade and banking status with the valuations of the yuan.
Watch for the full report.

Tahoma Traffic: Slow

Now the weekend is over, our construction crews are back at it.  Downtown Tahoma is restricted access throughout the day and early evening as the curb gutter is extended across the Pine/89 intersection.  Flagmen are posted at 3 spots, so: watch what you're doing as you approach Westside Pizza and the USPS.
Traffic is much less an issue as schools have opened in many cities down the hill.  Traffic into Tahoe City was light yesterday morning on a trip into the grocery store.  Clearly, the season is about done.  Not much will happen until next weekend when the race will happen on 89 around the lake.  September is always interesting-many events to entice visitors to our Lake basin.

Met a trio of visitors yesterday at Meeks.  They are from  Munich, Germany.  The daughter and her partner are post grad students at UC Berkeley, studying Russian history.  She brought me up to date on Russia and current attitudes toward Mr. Putin(Mad Vlad).   She is of the opinion that Mr. P has gauged the opinion of middle class Russia and tapped into their continued support for his popular politics, enjoying broad support from the emerging urban semi-professional.  However, it remains to be seen how well he'll be able to sustain their continued support in light of moves in Ukraine/Crimea.
Recent border incidents with Ukraine military indicate some hesitancy on the part of Mad Vlad.  Despite the loss of 1 jet fighter to an ground-to-air missile, the Kiev leadership continues to pommel separatists rebels near Donetsk.
The US and the Inter. Red Cross are on the ground near the Russian border to verify the reports about all cross border activities involving Russian claims.  Why is it that the Russians in the Kremlin think they can continue to lie in the face of current intelligence revelations?  Are they just inveterate liars?  Is it a genetic Russian defect?  Or merely a holdover from Uncle Joe Stalin and the Communist/KGB era?   Answers will be forthcoming.

The Dutch and The Fugitive

The House of Orange has given the national soccer club its uniform colors: orange.  When we observe the pitch with orange jerseys running amok, we think Netherlands.  But when we think international fugitives evading capture and extradition, we think F.B.I., Interpol, and maybe the I.R.S. or CIA.
As reported by our friend Anastasia O'Grady in the WSJ, the Dutch government snubbed a request by the USA to extradite a fugitive drug dealer from the Caribbean island of Aruba, where former Venezuelan Director of Intelligence had been detained by Dutch authorities.   Hugo Carvajal has been indicted in New York and Florida on drug trafficking charges.  The Dutch felt it was more important to remian on good terms with Venezuela than the USA.  Hmmm.  How does that happen?
Mrs. O'Grady feels that this decision can be rooted in the Obama White House 's retreat from global participation and a neglect of engagement worldwide, or isolationist tendencies that ebb and flow on America's shores.
Mr. Carvajal has been an acolyte of the former leader Hugo Chavez.   He has neen involved with FARC, the cross border rebel group in Colombia, and has been instrumental in providing a refuge in Venezuela for FARC troops.  So, does Obama need to wake up to Latin America?  It would seem so, especially as the Olympics will be in Brazil in 2 years, exposing the entire western hemisphere to close scrutiny from the rest of the civilized world(not including the Middle East, the wheel hub of uncivilized activity).
What are the chances of finding Mr. Carvajal in lock down anytime soon?  Slim and none.  Thank you, Mr. President.

Italy. Oh, Italy.

Now we know: Italy has slipped into recession.  Again.   Its 3rd recession since 2008.  What's going on in America's favorite European destination?  The new premier, Matteo Renzi, is an attractive, popular 39 year old, who swept into the No.1 leadership role in Italia after being the mayor of the important Tuscan city of Florence(Firenze).  Mario Draghi, the high profile leader of the European Central Bank, has not been able to reverse the downward slid of one of Europe's most important economies.
What does it mean and what will happen to: Italians, Europe, Germany, Spain, Greece, France, etc?  When will inflation return to ideal levels:2%/ann. rate?   Unfortunately, the economic problems in Southern Europe are more systemic than economic.  Despite austerity measures requested by her northern neighbors, the Italian Parliament has been unable to break the cycles that punish the efforts  of companies, workers, and government institutions.   Academics have been unable to turn around a sluggish rebound that has been plagued by high unemployment in that most important sector: the 18-24 year olds who must provide the engine for growth in any economy.
Matteo Renzi has tried tax cuts at the payroll level, but has not been able to rein in government spending to meet the cuts.   He has been able to pass some reform of the federal government, but those reductions have not spurred growth.   With a birthrate well below replacement, an aging population, like most of western Europe, cannot provide the stimulus the economy needs.  Recent immigrants from North Africa continue to burden social services, and Mr. Renzi has appealed to the EU for assistance in the area.
But most of all, the Italian legal system begs for reform.  It is the basis of private property ownership and for the redress of grievances both criminal and contractual.   The present system was put in place in 1930, under the boot of fascism and Mussolini.   It was only modified to any degree in 1988.  1988!  And then only partially.   Combined with out dated work rules, Italy will continue to be constrained by her own internal paralysis.   Change is necessary, but it will only arrive in Italy when the core of the country is significantly altered to effect needed changes.
     What's missing now: Leadership.

YO: Come On. Are You Kidding Me?

Technological innovation  continues unabated.  Some of it makes you wonder.  Now we have Yo!  Those of us of a certain age know about "Yo", popularized by the film character Rocky Balboa played by Sylvester Stallone to great acclaim.  Maybe it started in the streets of Philly, or the gyms of Philly, or the halls of Philly continuation high schools.
So, now we have "Yo", the app.   What does it do?  What is it for?  Why do we need/want it?  There is no 'there', there.  It is nothing, about nothing.  Basically, it sends an alert message to your iphone.  What?  An alert for what? A Tsunami?  A booty call?  My team scored a goal?  My partner found my foxy pocket?  Really!
None of the above.  Some analysts think its the next twitter.  It's a protocol started by a couple of Russians.  Soon, Yo will be available that actually does something of value(?).  In a week or so, real information will attend a Yo message.  Just what we need in our lives: more alerts, more distractions, more attention grabbing electronic connections.  Yow.
Where is all this going?  Nobody knows.

Stormy Weather

A late afternoon thunder storm rolled across the lake, south to north, bringing an intense downpour with it.  The wind kicked up and heavy rain pelted the house making quite a noise.  From the Mayor's perch overlooking the south lake, we could observe the front end of the squall as it moved north.  Beach goers at Meeks Camp watched, waited, then got up and ran to their tents and campers as the rains came down.
Given the dryness of the basin, there wasn't much runoff as the ground soaked up most of the 1 1/2 hours of rain.  I'm sure the Forest Service Firefighters are happy with this moisture dampening the fire risk.
The accompanying thunder and lightening was fun to watch and hear.  Great forks of blazing electrical bolts spiked down around Rubicon Peak at around 4pm.   Any sparks were quickly doused by heavy rain.   Summer in the Sierra, always interesting, more to come.

Classic Boat Show 2014-Homewood

Obexers' in Homewood was the place to be over the weekend.   Over 70 woodies were in the harbor, on display.   The much anticipated event appeared to be a great success.  Weather was perfect: warm and sunny.  The crowds were heavy with all the yachties turning out to see and be seen.  The CHP, Placer County Sheriff, and North Tahoe Fire personnel were on hand to keep things under control.
The special focus this year was the fabled "Barrel back design" of yesteryear.  This classic adaptation of small boat design was well received in the 40's and 50's as the post war building boom combined with 2nd home purchases to give the pleasure boat industry a boost.   Chris Craft produced quite a few as did Gar Woods.   Detroit engine manufacturers also were included as they modified their product line into marine models(engine cooling alterations, etc.).
Two main sponsors included Niello Porsche and Tahoe Luxury Properties.   An added bonus was the appearance of Riva Boats from Como, Italy.  They brought a newly built model that retailed for $530,000.   Many of the older Rivas were on display, many garnering Best of Show Awards.
Of course, the VIP building was there waiting for sponsors, boat owners, and Tahoe Yacht Club members who were the overall backers of the event.   The $30 admission fee(proceeds to charity) did not appear to hinder attendance.
Obexers seemed to revel in the limelight as viewers crawled over the harbor, taking boat pics and selfies to post on social media sites.  The Mayor ran into an old buddy, Jack M. who had a beautiful woodie on display.  His Annabelle won Best of Class and the award came with a $3000 wristwatch courtesy of one of the event sponsors( a Swiss Watch Co.).  Congratulations, Jack.
The low lake water levels meant gangplanks down to the docks were quite steep and more than a few folks opted to stay on the topside of the piers.  Maybe next year the lake will hold more water.
Hello, El Nino.

Who is Dino Cortopassi and why should we care?

When an individual puts his money where his mouth is, people take note.   This is not a case of corporate free speech, this is a case of REAL free speech.   Dean 'Dino' Cortopassi is a 77 year old Californian who is the son of Italian immigrants who grew up in the Central Valley and created a very successful company specializing in vegetables and olive oil.   He is concerned about the finances of the state and has begun a campaign to bring information to the citizenry about the facts of California's budget, as put forth by Gov. Jerry Brown, the 77 year old Democrat who is in his current 2nd term(3rd over all).
Mr. Cortopassi calls his campaign Liar-Liar-Pants on-Fire.   He has taken out a series of full page ads in 8 major newspapers across the state.  He accuses the Brown administration of using smoke-and-mirrors to spin the information on the current financial status of state coffers.   Among other facts, he points out that the pension funds of state employees is woefully underfunded by any measure and will soon bankrupt the state.
The ad campaign itself-the print ads, cost him north of $200,000.   This type of spending brings to mind H. Ross Perot, the Texan who formed a 3rd party over 30 years ago.   It also conjures up an image of Ralph Nader, the crusader who ran for President against Al Gore and George Bush, splitting the vote(but not affecting the eventual outcome).
Since the Democrats have gerrymandered the Republicans in the state out of political existence, the state has become a one party state government.  This is never a good thing.
With the state in a prolonged drought, water is also a concern of Mr. Cortopassi.  He recently lost a lawsuit against the state Dept. of Water Resources over distribution of Sacramento River water.   Could this be a case of sour grapes?   If it is, he's willing to spend many additional moneys to prove his point.
Where will it go and when will it end?  These self financed campaigns usually end on the rocks of financial shoals- not enough $$$ to continue without ending up in poverty.
Meanwhile, Mr. Cortopassi is enjoying the limelight, and willing to pay for it.
Stay tuned, more to come from Mr. C.

Russia and Snowden: Part II

Edward Snowden, the former NSA contractor hiding out in Russia, has been granted a 3 year visa extension, essentially a Green Card.   He can now make plans w/o the threat of immediate expulsion.  But of course, we know he is in Russia, and Mad Vlad can turn on a kopek and change his mind in a heartbeat.
What will Snowden do next?  Will he attempt to persuade Pres. Obama that the secrets he revealed were not really state secrets, but a current methodology used by NSA in its operations?   Will he reveal anything new and shocking?   Only time will tell.
Meanwhile, the NSA will hold its breath.

Book Review: BRAVE GENIUS, by Sean B. Carroll

CAMUS, Albert
MODON, Jacques
Yes, they are French, and yes, they are both Nobel Prize winners about 50 years ago.   What's the connection between the two?   As author Carroll spells out in his book,  these two friends met during the most difficult time in France in the 20th century:  the occupation of France by Nazi Germany.   In late 1940, the worst happened:  the Nazi army swept into France after swerving around the Maginot Defense line along the eastern border with Germany.   In no time, the French government fled to the south of France, and Nazis took over in Paris.  An armistice was signed, and the Vichy French Government was formed in collaboration with the occupying Nazis.
Albert Camus, a Frenchman from Algeria, was already a noted author and philosopher.   He had written a number of papers and was in the process of writing one of his masterworks: The Stranger.
Jacques Modon was a scientist working in a Parisian lab on microbiology and genetics.
When the reality of the occupation took hold, Col. Charles DeGaulle fled to England to establish a government-in-exile: Free France International.  Camus felt that the citizenry needed guidance, a sort of raison d'terre  to resist the Nazis.   An underground newspaper was created and called COMBAT.   To establish the organization needed, Camus had to connect with other like minded Frenchmen who still lived in Paris.   In time, he was able to cobble together a secret group who could print and distribute the paper that he edited.   The Gestapo was alerted to this effort and placed the group on its high priority list for arrest and removal.
Jacques Modon the scientist, was involved in advanced research at a lab in Paris, at the Sorbonne.  Nearby, the Pasteur Institute was also engaged in advanced research, following the guidelines of the famed microbiologist, Louis Pasteur.   His interests were confined to the relatively new area of genetics, or how life was continuously renewed over the generations with a code of life, a code theorized, but unknown.
The Resistance, as the underground military force became known as, needed leadership.  There were several local groups that attacked Nazi forces, but were unorganized, and easily compromised by the Gestapo and Vichy Intelligence Forces.  Modon was asked to assume overall leadership of these groups and to communicate with Allies in Switzerland where Americans(not yet in the war) could be contacted and pressed for support.
More later.

Minister in Shanghai

Hard to keep up with our man in motion: the Minister of Latin American Affairs is off to the Asian mainland for a conference in Shanghai.  The details are sketchy, but rumor has it he will be discussing recent cyber attacks that have  originated from China.   In an apparent coincidence, a private security firm announced that Russia has hacked over 500 million web sites and their passwords.   Apparently, this gathering of private passwords is unprecedented.   The information has been with the security company for sometime before the announcement.
No comments are forthcoming from the Kremlin, Vlad's busy elsewhere.

Tahoma Traffic Congestion

Well, here we are: the middle of summer season and the flagmen are all over downtown Tahoma.  With one lane closed, Friday morning was not smooth.   A construction project across the street at 6970 Westshore Blvd. was getting a concrete delivery at about 9am and added to the delays.  Things should smooth out when the weekend break goes into effect this afternoon.

The Boat Show
This weekend is the annual Wooden Boat Show at Obexers' Marina.   CHP cruisers were on hand to assist as visitors and owners vied for parking space.   Nearby property owners set up off street parking and a lemonade stand.   That's a first for Homewood!

Movies In the Park
This weekend's Saturday movie is" Kung Fu Panda".   I'm sure it will be a crowd pleaser.   Film begins to roll at about sundown.   Flashlights recommended.

Music at Commons Beach
Sunday afternoon at the beach, a free concert begins at 4pm.   Headliner is a band from San Francisco: NEW MONSOON.   THey've been around for a few years and have a following.  They have performed at Burning Man in Nevada several times in the recent past.   Their music is well worth the effort.  Bring a beach chair.

Sugar Pine Point Park
Picnicked on the beach yesterday with friends from New Orleans.   They had not been to the shores of our lake before.  They were impressed and enjoyed kayaking, swimming, and people watching.   There was ample parking and plenty of space to set up a day camp.   Best day of the week.

Meeks Bay Accident: 2 Russians Die

In an unusual late night accident on the lake, 2 Russian occupants of a private pleasure craft died at the scene in the vicinity of Meeks Bay.   Witnesses who were asleep on the pier struck by the boat said they were awaken by the sound of the crash and the force of the impact.   In the dark, they could not observe the occupants, but knew that the craft was obviously piloted by one or  more individuals.  The El Dorado County Sheriff was called and deputies responded from South Lake.  CHP also responded.   An ambulance was dispatched from North Tahoe Dist. Sta, in Homewood to assist.
The man and a woman were pronounced dead at the scene from injuries suffered on impact.   The couple were from the Bay Area and did not observe the extant of pier into the path of the boat.   At 1:30am, visibility was measured in only a few feet, and the moon was about half phase and low in the western sky.
Next of kin were being contacted and the US Coast Guard had dispatched a team of investigators because of Federal jurisdiction over Lake Tahoe waters.   Locals know that navigation aids on the lake are few and even with today's GPS instruments, they don't solve many location requests in the vicinity of Meeks Bay.   The accident report could be available in months.

Low Water Levels cause grounding

The tahoe Quenn, a tourist boat out of South Lake, ran agrounf 1/4 mile off Ski Run Blvd.  All passengers were evacuated safely.   Coast Guard investigators were on their way from SF to look into the grounding.  The Coast Guard has jurisdiction due to bi-state issues.

Bear Alert
15 bear break ins have occurred in T
ahoma in the past 30 days.  Little damage was done, but one small kitchen/stove fire was blamed on the intruder.   Secure your homes and appliances.

Rainy Weather Brings Relief
Over 1/2 inch of rain has fallen across the basin, tempering dry conditions and giving a break to severe fire conditions.   The slow steady rate allowed the moisture to soak in all over the Tahoe National Forest, as opposed to Southern california which experienced severe mud slides in San Bernadino.   Visitors to tahoe were not over joyed with the unseasonal weather, but, most folks kept up with their plans, sans beach.
     Sunny weather should return tomorrow.

Where We Met Update
Liz F., owner of our local espresso bar is on the mend after a bout of the virus.   She should be back in action within a few days.   Everybody misses our local smiley face and gelato Queen.

Highway 89
With a bit of rain, all the workers are staying home: safer than working heavy construction in the rain.  maybe they'll be back manana.  In the meantime, enjoy the smooth traffic flow through Tahoma.

Annual Meeting: TCHA
Saturday was the day of the annual meeting.  A chance for locals to say high and listen to a few reports from the assoc. board.   Not much happening; membership is down, again.   People are too busy?  Who knows?

Norfolk Inn   Hotel
Work continues, but there has been a definite slow down.  Permit issues, etc.  But it looks better with paint.

Wine in Time: 2013 Vintage

The news you've all been waiting for: the 2013 crush is out of the vat and into the bottle.  After weeks of preparation, careful consultation with industry experts, the Mayor finally took a leap of faith(no, not into the vat) and bottle his own Pinot Noir(French variety).
It is 100% Pinot.  The color is fantastic-deep reddish purple-the true Pinot color.  The aroma is fruity, but not too sweet.  The taste, if I say so myself, is excellent.   It should improve in the bottle over the next 2-3 years, but can be drunk anytime.  The bottling facility at the vineyard served as a good work space and could easily accommodate the equipment, bottles, boxes, corks, caps, etc.  The labeling will be done later(printing delay).   The Brand:  Via Cacciatore (of course)  The Hunter Way.
now registered).  Alcohol is about right: 13.2%.   The clarity is excellent without the necessity of adding clarifiers.  The extra time in the barrel helped out in this case.
News reports indicate that some growers are already harvesting the 2014 crop.  This coincides with the State of California's announcement of severe drought conditions over 58% of the state.  They have also imposed fines for excessive water usage at $500/ per each incident.  Incidents like washing cars, letting water run on the sidewalks, or using a hose without a control will all draw the fine.  Sounds like Communists are in charge.  But, no.  They are just self righteous democrats with Jerry Brown at the helm.
Of course, at the next town council meeting , wine will be served to all Tahomans who show up if over 18, are not allergic to sulfites, don't have a drinking problem, are not pregnant, on psychotropic meds,  or prone to vocal outbursts after one glass of vino!

New Ministerial Appointment

Held a meeting yesterday with a candidate for a newly created position on the mayor's staff: Minister of  United Kingdom Affairs and Western Europe.   The feeling is that with the upcoming Scottish Referendum on independence, it behooves Tahomans to have a contact on the ground.
With all of Western Europe going through some economic hard times; and with the Ukraine issue front and center, timely information is a must.   A formal announcement will be made soon.
The minister comes from an old and respected family from London.   He has studied law, is a barrister, a business man who started his own company in the USA; he has a family, and is comfortable on both coasts, spending time in New England and California.  His new home will be in California as his business grows.
      More later.

Caribbean Update

Our Minister of Latin American Affairs messaged the mayor's Office:  he was being interviewed on Caribbean TV with an update on Security for the regional members of the OAS.  The interview was in Spanish with some English spoken by some other members of the media.  He is doing an outstanding job.
More on the conference when he gets back to Washington.

Bear Alert>Sugar Pine Pt. Park

The Deputy Mayor was on a neighborhood survey yesterday and encountered a local bruin near the entrance to Sugar Pine S. Park.  The bear was off the bike path in some low scrubs, eating when a vehicle on 89 scared the animal and it bolted across the path 20' IFO the Deputy.
The Deputy, a veteran of several such encounters, remained calm, did not run, but waited for the yearling to scamper off into the creek bed and up the hill.
They're BACK!  So, play it safe, follow the rules: DON"T RUN(triggers an instinctual response to chase), spread arms wide, yell and throw rocks, make noise.
   Happy Summer-welcome August.

Mike the Seal(SEAL)

Ran in to Mike the S.E.A. L. yesterday in downtown Tahoma.  Mike's a seasonal local, 2nd generation Tahoman.  We caught up on local news now that he's back in the land of the living.   After several deployment across the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, he's going into the inactive reserves, at least for awhile.
In the meantime, he's shopping for a house off Pine St.  The Mayor will put him in the capable hands of Tahoma Realty and he'll have a house(or lot to build on) in no time.  He'll make a nice addition to the 'hood.   He can't wait for Homewood Mountain Resort to become a reality.  neither can we.
     Welcome to Mike the SEAL
