The Giants: Blanked Again

Pittsburg Pirates landed in SF and promptly handed them yet another defeat:5-0.  The Pirate pitcher, Worley, from Sacramento California, pitched the best game of his career, allowing only 3 hits in the shutout.
Sad.  Will somebody call Bochy and tell him it will all work out.  Maybe.

Italy: Oh, Italy, Why Can't You Change?

Like shoes?  Like Italian shoes?  How about  Buscemi Brand?  They'll set you back about $800.  Or E600.  But you won't be able to find any because: They are SOLD OUT already.  Marketing, gotta love it.  Sean 'Diddy' Combs got his.  Justin Bieber got a pair.   Swizz Beatz ordered 20 pairs when he saw them on line last year.
This little story highlights a part of the Italy of today:  a small sector of exports that are highly prized and represent a tiny fraction of the Italian economy; and everything else that stands to plague the long mountain-spined  peninsula attached to the underbelly of western Europe.   Rocked to its foundations by the Great Recession, Italy has not found a way to dig itself out.   Despite having one of their own in charge of the European Bank(Mario Draghi),  two successive technocrats were not able to stir life back into the economy where unemployment remains high and job creation is abysmal.
Compared to other European countries, Italy is at the bottom of GDP per capita from 1999 to 2012, having a negative improvement.   The issue can be identified as an inability to change.   Really, an inability to change anything.   Is that what Italians want?  No, but they haven't been able to find their way out of this prolonged post WW II recession.
Matteo Renzi, the 39 year old Prime Minister, has been in office less than a year and is still building his support in Parliament.   Despite his youth, in spite of his youth, he has not made significant progress to date.   He knows what has to be done: lower taxes, reduce the size of government; create jobs, and streamline the bureaucracy.
I like Italy and Italians, been there many times.  Some would say it's all about the food; some say it's all about art; some say it's all about wine.   I say none of the above.
It's all about a system that doesn't work for the 21st century.  The Italian people know change is needed, but haven't found the right leader who can overcome decades of misrule by the Fascists of Mussolini and the followers who enacted his policies to the long term detriment of the country.

Movie review: Le Chef

Foreign film with subtitles: not everybody's cup of tea.  I don't mind subtitles; once I'm absorbed in the story, they don't really become an issue.   Such is the case with Le Chef.
Yes, it's French, the characters are French, the locale is in France, and everybody speaks French.
Now, the story goes like this:
Famous chef is being pressed to reinvent himself, to keep up with the latest trends- here something called molecular gastronomy.  Yes, a fanciful farce of a trend.  Then in a series of coincidences, a sad sack aspiring chef stumbles into the chef's kitchen at the famed restaurant and proceeds to save the day.   Various episodic subplots help to carry the romp through the film to its finale as the maestro passes the baton.
Thoroughly enjoyable, visually attractive-food closeups, and artful performances by the cast.

The Old Grey Lady and Marijuana

Our great national info rag, The New York Times, has come out strongly in support of legalization of marijuana.  According to the editorial writer, the board discussed the topic at length(really?) and has decided, once and for all, that it's time to decriminalize the weed.  The weed that is so easily grown, so easily processed, so easily procured should be easily dismissed as a concern of police and our legal system.
The paper is devoting a series of articles in support of their editorial stance.   The subjects include the costs of enforcement, the effects on the different races,  states rights, health,  history, regulation, and the track record of various efforts at control.
Hard to believe that it all started with Tricky Dick Nixon when he signed the law placing marijuana on the List of Controlled Substances, where it remains.  Among  other things, we know there is legitimate debate on usage at different ages.  But compared to alcohol and tobacco, marijuana does not belong in the same class.   Does the typical user add chemicals to the weed like cigarette companies?  Do they advertise despite health warnings plastered all over their packaging?  Do long term marijuana users walk around dragging oxygen tanks with nasal cannulas attached?
It will be an important journalistic effort to educate lawmakers, educators, users, and skeptics alike.
I look forward to reading the comments of readers from across the land.  Don't miss this opportunity to become an informed citizen.  Follow closely, too, what's happening in the states of Washington and Colorado, two that recently voted to legalize the sale and use of pot within their borders.

Argentina: Nearing the Precipice

Within 48 hours the question will be answered:  Will Argentina default again on the country's bond debt?   The finance secretary, Pablo Lopez has been in New York for mediation talks.   It's a staring contest-who is going to blink?   If Christina Kirchner doesn't satisfy the sovereign debt obligation,  she and her countrymen will be toast, cut off from international finance markets and labelled a chronic abuser of contracts and commitments. This is not good, Christina.
Your people, yes, the people who elected you, deserve better.  Those hard working, struggling citizens who have placed their collective trust in your government, they want peace and stability at home.  The Peronists give them promises and some feel good benefits, but without the truth, the true costs.   Give them some of both, they will accept it, maybe.
Your bluster, your feigned contempt for the bond holdouts, your attacks on the US courts(including the Supremes) are unseemly and only serve to diminish your stature as an effective leader, even among your faves in Chile, Colombia, Venezuela, and Brazil.
You've got a few hours left before the lights go out: don't blow it, Madam President.

Mary and the Castros

No, it's not the name of a new punk rock band.   It refers to Mary O'Grady, the distinguished journalist who writes on Latin American affairs.  She writes today of a recent meeting between Mad Vlad  and his Cubano amigo, Mad Raul Castro, Fidel's little brother who now runs the island since his older bro lost his attention span.
The Russian is making a personal bid to ingratiate himself with the former Russian client state.  How much will it cost the Russian people this time?  In 2013,  PM Medvedev signed some agreements forgiving about $30 billions in debt, and agreeing to lease 8 Russian jets(clunkers) worth $650millions.  In February, the Russian Defense Minister announced he was engaged in talks to establish military bases in Venezuela, Cuba, and Nicaragua(with China?).
Now, Vlad, come on.  We've been down this Cuba path before.   Remember 1962?  Ok, maybe you're too young to recall the old Shoe Banger, Kruschev(Nikki).  I'm sure one or more of your staff(old guard) can recall some of the story.
Now Washington can tolerate quite a bit of foreign maneuvering, especially in Europe, Asia, and Africa.  But when it comes to the western hemisphere, Washington politicos tend to get a little edgy.  So, Ok, you like to see your name in the media, like to hear the buzz contain Putin, Putin, Putin.  I'm sure you like to see a few Latinos in power down south grovel with their hands out, hoping for a few favors.   These actions only serve to discredit you and your country in the eyes of the world.  There's no subtlety here, but, apparently, that's just Putin being Putin.
So, you are looking for oil around Cuba.  So, you've signed a few agreements for business and trade with Cuba.  For what?  Sugar cane?  Mercenaries?  Cigars?  Rum?  Humidity?
What is it about Russian KGB folks?   Don't they just get tired of it all?  It's embarrassing to see grown men act like children.
Thank you, Mary O'Grady for highlighting Mad Vlad's recent Caribbean adventure.  Our Minister of Latin American Affairs texted us with local opinions on the little Russkie's visit to the Castro's playpen, 90 miles off the Florida coast.

Caribbean Mission

Our Minister of Latin American Affairs is down south again this week.  He's on the island of Domenica, participating in another conference with member state representatives.   Being an experienced  visitor, he assures our office that he will explore the surroundings of the main city, perhaps visiting the DeVry Medical school campus.
Weather looks good without any threat of a hurricane.  It is hurricane season, after all.   We'll keep a weather eye out for the swirling track signature.

Ukraine Now:July 27, 2014

Investigators are inspecting the crash site of the downed airliner, but are having difficulty with rebel forces in control of the scene.  Ukraine pres. Poroshenko says he will not negotiate with the rebels thereby giving them a semblance of official recognition.
As Malaysian Air teams inspect the site, the Dutch people begin to identify returned bodies, a process that could take months.   A funeral cortege wound through Amsterdam carrying one of the first victims.  Time magazine published an article on the tragedy tht included 2 startling photos: the first was of a wheat field that enclosed a complete aircraft seat from the plane with a body still strapped in place; the second was the interior of a home in dim light which clearly showed a corpse lying on the floor beneath a gaping hole in the ceiling above.  The resident, head bowed, was photographed in the next room, trying to make sense of what has happened to his world.
The US has released information that demonstrates Russia's involvement in the shoot down on many levels.  The data also highlights Russia's continued support of the rebels with heavy artillery from across the border.
And so, the world has come to understand that Mr. Putin continues to advance his personal agenda, exercise power beyond Russia's borders.  His track record is very plain:invasions of Georgia and Crimea; the murder of Sergei Magnitsky; the prison sentences of Pussy Riot; the legal harassment of Alexei Navalny; the asylum granted to Edward Snowden; and the cheating on the IMF Treaty.  All these incidents and events serve to undercut Columbia University professor Robert Levgold who has professed US policy should focus on clarifying the US-Russian interface.   Hmmmmm.   In the current issue of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Levgold urges damage control to avoid misperceptions.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian army units continue to pressure rebel forces near Donetsk.

UK Announces Investigation into Murder of Former Russian Agent

In a symbolic gesture aimed at the US and EU member states, UK Prime Minister Cameron announced that a formal investigation will begin into the circumstances surrounding the death of the young former Russian agent who was living in London when he died of apparent poisoning at a hotel in London after meeting with 2 different Russian nationals who fled the country back to Russia.
The Russian defector, Alexander Litvinenko, met with an FSB(Russian Federal Security Service) agent in a London hotel on Nov. 1, 2006.  He became ill over the next 3 weeks before it was determined he had been poisoned by a dose of Polonium-210.  He died after suffering multiple organ failure.   The image of Litvinenko as a dying man was introduced to the British population in the tabloid news media. In a recently published interview, Mr. Litvinenko's widow explained that the West may now decide that attempting to conduct normal relations with Mr. Putin's government in the Kremlin is a loser's game.
Mr. Litvinenko's crime: exposing internal corruption with FSB officials and post-Soviet era businessmen.   When the head of the FSB resigned, he was replaced by-----Vlad Putin!  Then Mr. Litvinenko's phone was tapped.  After several arrests and detentions, the Litvinenkos made their way to the UK through Turkey.  They were granted asylum.
After the Russian lawmakers passed laws allowing targeting of state enemies abroad, a names list came out with the names of Litvinenko, Anna Politkovskaya and Boris Berezovsky.  All 3 are now dead, Berezovsky last year of an apparent suicide.
The twp perps involved with the polonium poisoning, Dmitry Kovtun and Andrei Lugovoi are still in Russia,  beyond the reach of UK authorities that have requested extradition, only to be ignored by Mad Vlad's FSB.
Marina, the widow Litvinenko, says she wants only the truth to be made known, for the sake of her late husband, now dead for almost 8 years.  She claims Putin is not interested in rapprochement, only the power and the money he now has to enhance the power.

Hillary Clinton on CNN

Former US. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton  made a personal appearance this morning on the Sunday morning show hosted by Fareed Shakaria.  He asked quite a few questions of the former head State Dept. official.  He was particularly interested in hearing of her experience with Russian President Vlad. Putin.  Mrs. Clinton did not have to negotiate any significant agreements with the former head of the KGB, but they did meet face to face a couple of times during her tenure.
Her opinions were guarded and carefully worded.  She mentioned advising her boss, Pres. Obama, that Mr. Putin was not to be pursued for any commitment to change or compromise on any issue.  She also said he was detached during discussions and appeared bored and condescending of those other statesmen.  Interestingly, CNN displayed close ups of Mr. Putin, focusing on his eyes, as though viewers would be able to discern his personality traits.
Now Mrs. Clinton covered quite a few miles while Secretary, but she did not make a difference in Iraq, Afghanistan, Egypt, Israel, Gaza, or China, North Korea, or Latin America.  Perhaps her best efforts went to the EU and its recovery efforts.
The 2016 elections are 2 + years away, and a lot can happen between now and then.   After her book debut, there are still many questions.   Time will tell.

Obama and the 3 Kings

Well, 3 presidents. really.  The presidents of Hondurus,  Guatemala, and El Salvador met with Pres. Obama in the White House to work out an emergency plan to help the children from those 3 countries who are fleeing a variety of conditions to make their way to the USA, braving a multitude of hazards along the way.  Many folks ride " The Beast".  The Beast is the name given to the railroad train that carries many migrants from Mexico's southern borders to the Rio Grande river border of USA/Mexico which they then hope to cross after paying the fee to the boatmen-as much as $200-$300/head for the 5 minute ride.
What will they decide?  Apparently, in an attempt to satisfy existing law, refugee status will be granted to those applicants in host countries that can prove they are fleeing death threats, violence, or both based on various criteria.   This change causes more problems, but it may stop the children from attempting to reach the river.
Each country has its own problems, some more than others.  Even Mexico is directly involved since that country is transited by the migrants seeking residence in the USA.  This program gives new meaning to the term "anchor babies".
Given the Middle East nightmare, Obama is probably delighted to negotiate with countries not besieged by jihadist militants threatening to cut the head off of any Christian in the neighborhood.  Not easy being a Christian in the Levant.
We'll be waiting to see what announcement is made from the press secretary's office this afternoon.

Muir Beach Steps Out

Coast side north of the City was the place to be last night.  Muir Beach locals gathered at the community center for a night of fun and frolic.  It was an improbable gathering that celebrated: 1) mid-summer;2) community spirit,3) free expression(costumes, dance  styles), 4) glorious weather.
The center's location on the north side of the beach above Redwood Creek, affords a great view of the hills and the creek basin as it reaches the Pacific.
As of 7pm, there were about 50 folks still enjoying the sand and sea, with some swimmers still  braving the 58 degree waters.  Beach fires winked from the fire rings on the beach as energetic diners set about heating up picnic staples(dog on a stick?).
The dj hired for the event worked his magic and brought large numbers of guests to the floor to interpret the music in their own way.  One forgets the rules these days: non- stop music, stop when you drop, keep up if you can!
The Mayor talked with the former fire chief of the MB Volunteer FD.  In keeping with the floral theme of the evening, he wore a head piece composed of fruits and vegetables.  His wife, on the other hand, word a garland of fresh cut grape leaves complete with a cluster of champagne grapes!  Among the other guests one could observe a variety of costumes such as: a chipmunk; a skunk; a crow; a moonlit night; a deer-in-the- headlights; a female action hero(?); lady bug; and my fave- a mermaid.  To add to the fun, a photo booth was set up and a photographer was on hand to do the honors.  Props were available to enhance any fantasy.
Many of the guests hailed from nearby Green Dragon Zen Temple, a long time presence at the Beach.  Many of the long time staff let their hair down, kicked up their heels, and enjoyed the event.
One guest, aka Dancing Mountain appeared to be the coordinator and kept the action going.   Home made food was on hand and lemonade, coffee, milk and whatever you brought to share was there, too.
Much of the activity moved outside as the warm night enticed dancers to cool off on the deck.
By 10pm-last dance time- folks began to head home as tired revelers melted into the night.
A good time was had by all.

The City: The Foggy City in Summer

From birth, native San Franciscans know about the Fog.   They know about summer in the City, how cold it is and how much the fog is part of the City's summer.   So, of course, summer in the City was all about getting out of the City-anywhere out there.
So, going to the Fog Belt today was to approach a known situation, especially at The Legion of Honor(Honneur), our decidedly French replica of a museum.   The Impressionists were on display, again.
Much of the art came from the National Gallery in Washington ,DC, part of the Mellon collection gifted years ago by Paul and his sister, Aisla, children of Andrew Mellon, the banker.  All the usual suspects were included: Manet, Pissarro, Gauguin, Sisley, Cezanne, and Renoir.   One never tires of their art.
To complete the effort, our next stop was the nearby De Young Museum, where an exhibition of the Weisel Collection of Native American artifacts was on display.   It included textiles(serapes and chief blankets), pottery, and carvings-masks and rattles.   The weavings were from the mid-19th century- 1840-1865.   The simple forms incorporated combined with the vivid dyes to give the different pieces distinct appearances.
The museums were experiencing a midweek lull, with most galleries hardly crowded, and few tourists were in evidence.  I did meet a mother and daughter from Peru who knew about the special exhibition and made a point to visit.  Good for them.
On the way home, we drove through Sausalito-  Look out for bicycle riders.  They were everywhere, as thick as flies, except these folks were all over the road, oblivious to through traffic.  Downtown was no better, with even more riders on both side of the street.  Now this is a summer scene.  I'm sure the locals appreciate the traffic=$$$$$$$$$!
No fog in Sausalito.

Oakland v. Astros: at the O.co Park

You have to love the names these companies tag on these sports facilities.  In Oakland, CA, we have Overstock.com taking naming rights to a new high/low: with O.co.   Hmmm.  How much thought went into this name.  Oh, well.
It was a party with 16 attendees: Mothers, Dads, Moms, kids, friends, anD lots of food.  We had a suite in the Loge section, high above the 3rd base foul pole.  Nice view of all the action, especially long balls hit to left field.
After a warm up with some hot dogs and garlic fries, the real food arrived:  hamburger sliders, bacon wrapped sausages, roast beef sandwiches, lots of FatTire beers, red and white vino, pulled pork and sauteed peppers to top the pork.  With the comfort of an enclosed suite, the windy outside weather was only a factor when somebody opened the door.
The crowd amounted to about 22K, or about 50%-not too bad for midweek against the 'Stros.
Well, despite all the fun, by 10pm it was time to call it quits.  We bailed out to make it home before sun up.  Yes, the A's finally lost in the 11th inning.  But, they're winning tonight-8-2 in the 8th.  Many of our gang were all decked out in Green and Gold attire, shoes and all!

Obama Visits the City

The Prez visited his favorite Democratic bastion yesterday, drumming up some donations for the DNC to help finance campaigns in November's midterm elections.  These elections are considered pivotal to retain Senate majority margins to facilitate the DNC agenda during Obama's remaing 2 years in office.  At the same time, Hillary Clinton was in southern California to drum up support for a possible run in 2016.  This comes at a time when there are an increasing number of armed conflicts going on around the world.  To name a few: Syria, where Assad is trying(for 3 years) to crush an insurgency; Gaza, which has been invaded by Israelie troops trying to suppress the rocket barrages unleashed by the Hamas leadership; the  advance of Boko Haram in NIgeria where Nigerian army troops appear helpless to contain the attacks; Iraq, with attacks by Taliban troops on formerly secure cities; Afghanistan, where Al-Queda appears ready to undue Pres. Karzai' work over the last several years; and in Ukraine, where rebels shot down a Malaysian civilian jet killing 295 passengers and crew(with Russian made weapons supplied to rebels by the Kremlin.
So, the Prez has a lot on his plate, without mentioning his domestic agenda(Obamacare) which had a legal setback when a federal court ruled yesterday that the federal insurance exchanges could not offer subsidies in states that opted out of the program(36).
    This summer is getting interesting.

Book Review: Waiting to be Heard-Amanda Knox

After almost 1 year in writing and editing, the story of Amanda Knox, in her own words, has been published.  Here, in honest, candid description, she recounts the details of her ordeal at the hands of over zealous police forces, desperate prosecutors, a full fledged print media circus in Italy, EU, and especially Great Britain.
From her own notes written during her almost 4 years to the day in prison, she recounts in minute detail, the trials and tribulations of an 20 yr. old American college student alone, abroad in a foreign country, unable to speak the language beyond an elementary level, accused of a heinous crime: the murder of her roommate in their apartment during a time when she was absent.
Not a lawyer, Amanda is faced with a legal system that on first glance, appears to function in similar ways to the American system: courts, judges, lawyers, prosecutors, and a prison system for convicted offenders.   But the differences prove to be confusing, often baffling, and a time frame of events that almost completely ignore the calender.
Perugia is an old city located in the province of Umbria.   Known as the breadbasket of Italia, this province lacks a sea coast.  But it has fertile soils, a fine climate, and many attractions for visitors.  The University of Perugia attracts many Italians, and the University for Foreigners attracts a large contingent of students from abroad, including America.  This was the institution that Ms. Knox attended along with her roommate, Meredith Kercher.
Her ordeal began on Nov. 1, 2007 when her roommate's body was discovered in their apartment they shared with 2 other Italian grad students.  It didn't take long for public prosecutor and head police investigator, Giuliano Mignini to seize the opportunity to attempt to rescue his tarnished reputation, sullied by his actions in Florence during another murder investigation from the prior year.
In no time, the lead investigators began to focus on Amanda and her boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, an older student from Bari, the son of a prominent family from the southeast Italian coast.  After lengthy interrogations without benefit of counsel, Amanda and Raffaele were arrested for murder of her roommate.   And the media circus commenced with her arrest.
Concomitant with her arrest,  Mignini began leaking alleged "facts" learned during the coarse of his investigation.  He fabricated a lurid story of a sex party gone awry on Halloween night, a night of partying across the Italian landscape, especially among the university's students in Perugia.  These revelations were like chumming he waters with shark bait and the sharks responded with outrageous stories based on hearsay, conjecture, and Mignini's outright lies.
After a week, a 21 year old Italian citizen of African birth was arrested in Germany and extradited to Perugia.  He was arrested and charged with the murder in addition to the other two.  This man had been known to local police and was responsible for two earlier break ins in Perugia, and had been caught with stolen goods.  His method of entry, breaking a window and climbing through matched evidence at the girls' apartment.   Mignini's opinion stated this evidence was staged.  Mr.  Guede, the
African perpetrator, denied direct involvement.  His DNA was found all over the room where the crime(s) occurred, along with fingerprints and footprints.

Between Going and Staying

Between going and staying the day wavers,
in love with its own transparency.

The circular afternoon is now a bay
where the world in stillness rocks.

All is visible and all elusive,
all is near and can't be touched.

Paper, book, pencil, glass,
rest in the shade of their names.

Time throbbing in my temples repeats
the same unchanging syllable of blood.

The light turns the indifferent wall
into a ghostly theater of reflections.

I find myself in the middle of an eye,
watching myself in its blank stare.

The moment scatters.  Motionless,
I stay and go: I am a pause.

Netherlands Deals With Tragedy of Downed Flight in Ukraine

The Dutch government is giving extensive assistance to families who lost members in the airline tragedy brought on by Russian sponsored rebels in eastern Ukraine near Donetsk.   Latest totals on  victims include 154 Dutch nationals who were on board enroute to KL.  One passenger was a dual citizen Dutch-American.  Published photos include some that have entire families who were among the murdered civilians targeted by advanced Russian -made rocket propelled antiaircraft missiles.
Some Dutch investigators have been allowed into the site of the final resting but not all.  Investigators explained that limiting team members would hamper efforts to collect and analyze clues as to what happened(other than the known method used to bring the aircraft down=missile).
Many Dutch citizens on board were going to an international conference on HIV infections and current status of prevention methods and control of the spread of the virus that causes HIV.
The Kremlin says blame should be directed to Ukrainians in Kiev.  These statement have been sharply criticized by all Europeans.   Western European governments have already stated that further sanctions against Russian business interests abroad will be forthcoming.

Ministers Arrive: Some Surprises

Well, it was planned as a small gathering.   A few of the regulars, a couple of friends.  And then, it wasn't so small.   The Minister of Latin American Affairs showed up enroute to DC from Mexico City.  It was an unplanned stop but he felt he needed to update the Mayor on the situation in Mexico.  The latest conference was organized by PEMEX, the state oil giant.  They requested assistance from the OAS to help state and private energy companies and energy suppliers confront hackers that may attack their grid and other distribution systems.   The conference was well attended and all participants deemed it a grand success.
This comes at a time that Mexico is stepping up border controls along its southern borders with Central American countries: namely, Honduras, Guatamala, and El Salvador.   President Obama of US will meet with the presidents of all 3 countries this week to discuss humanitarian conditions among recent immigrants.   Plans for returning those families who cross the Rio Grande River in Texas and seek a green card  will be spelt out.   Mexico has itsown issues along its southern border.
The Minister of Aviation and Manufacturing arrived a little later.  He brought the latest info on the Farnborough Show in the UK.   Boeing was expected to book some large orders.  Airbus was there, too.   He briefed the Mayor on latest developments.   He also mentioned a new program developed by Otto F.  Eligible employees can enroll in graduate school and complete courses on their on time and have full funding from the company.  Very generous, indeed.
The Minister of East Asian Philosophy appeared at the meeting and gave a progress report on the recent campus activity at her training facility.   Recent contacts in Japan relayed status reports on training in Kyoto and Kobe, Japan.   Tea training was also a current topic.
And then, the manager of sports and athletics arrived, unannounced.   He had heard of the arrival of the Latin American Minister and did not want to miss out.  He reported on post World Cup actions by FIFA.
Our  representative in Shanghai showed up with her fiance' and the upcoming wedding was discussed, and all members appreciated the candid delivery.   Her fiance', a med student at Berkeley, expressed his desire to see the ceremony go down in fine traditional Chinese culture.(September).
Our minister of Automotive Engineering engaged all with his good insights and questions.   He regaled attendees with stories from his lengthy history in the industry.

Movie Review: Chef

Is it a Road Trip?  Is it a foodie tale of fantastic cooking?   Is it a comedy?  Is it a drama?  Or a combination of all of the above?   It's a little of everything.   Jon Favreau has done a job, actually, he's done a lot of jobs:  actor, director, screen writer, editor.  But, additionally, it's about social media; in this case-Twitter and how it works in many cases.
The beginning involves a contest of wills between Chef Faveau and restaurant owner Dustin Hoffman who doesn't want to give up menu control to the "hired" chef.   Throw in a food critic and the table is set for fireworks which get the chef fired or just mad enough to quit.   Next step, Food truck!
The trip back to California begins in Miami, FL and follows the trio: father, son, and mainstay support cook from coast -to-coast.  Across the souther states with stops in N'Orleans, Austin,TX, and back to LA and its food scene at the beach.   There's a happy, feel good ending.   The sound track features some fine Cuban tunes and enough soul music for the more experienced listener.
4 Stars if you have eaten recently, 5 stars if you're hungry.

Goodbye to the Captain

The MLB All -Star game took place Tuesday.  Did anybody watch?  The game was on the TV at WestSide Pizza and a few locals enjoyed the game.  One of the special features included a tribute to the man and career of the "Captain".   Some have called him the captain of major league baseball.   Derek Jeter, the quintessential professional athlete: dependable, exceptional, professional during the ups and downs of a 19 year career.   He smiles and doffs his cap as the generous fans stand and offer accolades as he begins the last half of his final season with the American League New York Yankees, his only employer during this remarkable run.
He did it all: hitting, fielding, base running, and dealing with the injuries and comebacks that bedevil those players in their final active playing days.   In time, he will be inducted into the "Hall", a reward for his service.  Like his peers, he will bask in the limelight, and retreat into comfortable retirement, called out on special occasions to put a face on the history of a generation, and on the face of Yankee stardom.
What a pleasure to watch this talented individual play a game that is so hard to master and play it so well.   All fandom revels in his collective accomplishments.
We, in turn, doff our caps to "The Captain"- Derek Jeter.
Enjoy the next 80 games.

French Premier Steps Up

Francois Hollande called for an investigation into today's airliner tragedy.   Many French citizens were on board the Malaysian Airways 777 that was hit by a Russian missile while traversing Ukraine airspace.  The French Prime Minister expressed sympathy for the families of victims of the attack.  The wreckage landed on Ukrainian soil, just 50 km from the Russian border.   In other words, the plane had almost exited Ukraine airspace on its journey to Kuala Lumpur(KL).   No one is claiming ownership of this act which could only mean the perps are scurrying to cover their tracks to divert attention from their dastardly deed.
It must be and can only be a Russian authorized event.  Who pushed the button is irrelevant.  The missile was brought to the launch site by Russians, aimed by Russian technology, and fired on Russian command.  Ergo, the fault lies with our good friend(Ha) Vlad the Mad.  Is it time for Medvedev to return?  Or is it time for the military to take over the Kremlin and restore order, or something that looks like order in Russia.  Clearly, the path of Russia is not forward, but backwards.  Now, come on.  Hasn't the world lived long enough with post war (WW II) xenophobia?  The proud Russian people have a right to take their place among the moderns of the world, and not retrench behind the wire of isolation, fear, and foreboding.   Will they be willing to squander the years of progress since the dissolution of the USSR?  Will Vlad push forward his goal of a Novorussiya?  Will the DUMA go along?  All good questions.

Gaza, Hamas, and Israel: Here we go again

Missiles, missiles, and more missiles.   Iron Dome Shield, mobile launch sites, civilian casualties.
Accusations, calls for cease fire are ignored, postponed, and demanded.   Funerals are carried out, victims' families mourn, and still, nobody blinks.   Is it caused by a germ or a virus?  Is it the water?  What brings these neighbors to the brink and beyond so regularly?  The questions continue to be the same, and they remain unanswered as innocents die and politicians chatter.
Israel has mobilized forces on the Gaza border; they are poised in attack formations; warnings have been passed on to Palestinian residents to move out of their homes to prevent further loss of life.     All the talk seems to have no effect.   Hamas continues to make bellicose statements designed for the home front more than Israel.   Yassir Arafat, the late leader of the PLO, would have had his photo plastered all over to remind his followers that he's in charge and will deal with Israelis.  Now, Hamas does not appear to have a face, or anyone willing to put their face on the problem.   This only compounds the problem for Israel as the Prime Minister, Mr. Netanyahou, attempts to deal with the latest storm of missiles fires from Gaza.

Mexico as we Speak

Our Minister of Latin American Affairs is currently on the ground in Mexico City.  A large conference is underway which requires his presence and input.   How timely!  Mexico has been a participant in recent immigration problem solving as the US tackles the influx of illegals from Central America, as many as 57,000 mostly children from Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador.  Most of these individuals traveled through Mexico enroute to Texas, the primary crossing point.  They have been lured by promises of asylum and with it an excellent chance at permanent residency ahead of those on a waiting list and ahead of those with H1-B visas.
So, we will anticipate his report that will follow his return to Wash,DC next week.   His team of fellow diplomats will also contribute to this report.   While Tahoma is not on the Rio Grande, all California is affected by this most recent illegal activity.
One of our friends has an H1-B visa and his job relocated to Baltimore,MD from San Francisco.  He had no choice but to relocate with the company to follow the rules of the H1-B visa.   Will the rules change?  Not anytime soon.   Border states are scratching their collective heads trying to figure out how to cope with this Federal problem that so directly affects their states.........

Vlad: The Beat Goes On in Ukraine

As I have mentioned most recently(yesterday), Vlad the Mad is not a happy man.   Today, a civilian aircraft flying at 33,000 feet over Ukraine, was hit by a missile from the ground.   The 295 passengers did not survive.  The aircraft departed a few hours earlier from Amsterdam bound for Kuala Lumpur.   The aircraft was a Boeing 777 owned by Malaysian Airways, the company that lost a plane in the Indian Ocean just months ago(not found yet).
The Ukraine Government claimed the missile was launched by Russian -backed separatists in eastern Ukraine, near the border with Russia.   It could not have been a shoulder-fired type, but a more sophisticated SAM-type of known capabilities.   US Intelligence sources our scrambling to identify the exact launching site, and who controlled the area.  It is doubtful the separatists have the skills or organization to carry out the attack on a high flying multi-engined aircraft.   However, it won't be long before the investigation begins to put the event into sharp focus.   Financial markets were spooked, and indexes were all lower across the board.
Pres. Obama gave a speech in Wilmington, Delaware and expressed his concerns for the families of the plane's passengers and crew members.   He also expressed his concerns directly to Pres. Vlad Putin during a prearranged  phone call, intended to discuss the sanctions announced on Tuesday that would affect Russian companies, including banks and manufacturers.
   Vlad: are you listening?
Perhaps it's time that the governments of Russia's trading partners start calling a spade a spade: that is, Mr. Putin, you are unfit to govern a modern state, despite your cultural heritage and your past service in the KGB.  What are the chances on this day of Angela Merkel's birthday?

Vlad: Now REALLY Mad

Good morning, Vlad.  Barry Obama here.  Got some good news, and some bad news.  Angela(Merkel) will continue to trade with your country for at least another 2 months.  That's the good news.   I, in turn, will put sharp restrictions on trade and finance with your country..  I've frozen the assets of several businesses from your country.   I've expanded the list of persons who will not be allowed into my country.   I have expanded the list of restricted export items that may not flow to your country or those within your sphere of influence.
This is all because of your country's actions in Crimea and Ukraine.  The Western world still considers your takeover of land in an independent sovereign nation as contrary to principles of International Law.   As a member of the United Nations, you are duty bound to uphold the tenets of its charter, one of which precludes the invasion and occupation of another member state.
So, Obama has given Vladi another indication that he's not really going for the ruse that Putin used to make the move into Crimea.
What's next for Vladi?   I'll bet Vladi whould like the answer to that question sooner rather than later.
What if the BRICS tell Vladi he can't join their club unless he backs out of Crimea?   Hmmm.   Maybe India will become the headquarters for the new BRICS Im/EX Bank.  Maybe not.   Maybe China will tell Putin to get out of Crimea.?   Will Putin listen to the Chinese?  Ha.   Maybe he'll realize that he's running a little insignificant country full of vodka -swilling alcoholics  who don't like working for the man.   This game is stretching out to fill the northern summer.   When will it end?

Highway 89 at Pine

Caltrans and crews have taken over during business hours, keeping one lane open from 8-5pm.  Not much we locals can do but grin and bear it.   Be careful and don't try any wild and crazy moves to avoid a 5-10 minute wait.  Not worth it.
Traffic seems light for mid July, but it's hard to figure given the traffic stops between Tahoma and Tahoe City.  The mayor took a nice morning stroll through Sugar Pine Pt. Park the other morning and enjoyed the tranquility of sunrise on the West Shore.   Lots of new wash rocks were evident as the lake level continues to drop.   Looking out toward the lake from Fanny Bridge, one can see that it won't belong before the outlet of the lake, Truckee River, will cease to have any runoff.   Then the rafters will count their profits and go home for the season, again.
All's quiet at the Norfolk Hotel, as predicted.   Maybe in a month or so, the crews will return.
Enjoy July

World Cup to Germany

At the bitter end of an equally hard fought contest, the Deutchlanders triumphed over the the South American opponent.   In the 117 minute,  Mario Goete put  a volley past the Argentine goalie into the far corner of the net.   A terrific goal without controversy, only admiration and also disbelief.  @ 1/2 minutes from the agony of a shoot out, both teams responded in kind.   One jubilant with the taste of victory welling up in their mouths; the other, downcast and forlorn.   Lionel Messi put a  free kick over the goal to no avail.   The contest ended with unmatched jubilation from the German side, confirming the hours of practice, the tropical heat, the long travel times in the vast forests of Amazonia, not to mention the transAtlantic ride at the beginning of the tournament.
All the participants can return to normalcy, except Goezte, who will live forever as the face of Germany's 4th World Cup victory.   As a 22 years old, he will live his adult life, his soccer career and its aftermath in the reflected light of glory from his moment as a blazing comet across the world.
Much will be written of the game, the struggles, the close calls, and missed opportunities.  Suchis sport, such is soccer.  The host Brazil can bask in a completed task that began with controversy and ended with some, but less.
Vladimar Putin, Russian president/premier, was on hand to accept the baton leading to Russia in 2018.   That project will be interesting, given the current geopolitics and Realpolitik.
But Russia is older, smaller, and perhaps more experienced when it comes to sport, money, and politics.   It can be argued that just as much corruption exists in Brazil as in Russia, but there's less money in Brazil.
In Tahoma, West Side Pizza was the preferred venue for local fans and the place was packed for hours as the European rep battled the South American flag carrier.   Everyone enjoyed the excitement, if not the outcome(many supporters of the Europeans were in evidence).  Joaquin, the owner, took many bets from German side fans(in the kitchen, too), and set about balancing them all after the final whistle.   Bravo Joaquin, the loyal supporter of River!

Vlad and the BRICS

Russian President Putin is meeting with BRICS countries in an attempt to form a banking union less dependent on the World Bank and the IMF.  This is a challenging move and may serve notice that Russia is trying to force the West to look differently on the BRICS.
Time will tell as the world economy attempts to throw off its lethargy and start expanding again.
More on this move later, after the conclusion of the meeting.

World Cup: Half Time-Rio di Janeiro

Both teams, Germany and Argentina missed scoring chances in the scoreless first half.  Argentina looks like they came to play and have pushed back in Germany's various attacks.  Argentina missed a beautiful opportunity after a Teutonic pass went array at midfield.  The player streaked to the goal and the defender raced to catch up as the goalie came out.  His shot went wide and the Argentinos let out a groan as here was a chance of the match.
A Germann player, Kramer, went off with injuries after trying to stay in after the hit.  A hard shoulder contact to his face put him out.  We hope he will be fine.
  Second half action momentarily.

Your balls on Bluetooth

The Mayor could not resist the temptation of this post title.   Adidas announced it has a new high tech soccer ball coming to market.  The ball is the same size as their World Cup model but this ball is Bluetooth enabled. It will cost $299 and be available now in selected markets.
The ball was tested with 8000 kicks against a steel wall at 60 mph.  It will withstand 7000 kicks during its useful life.
The ball will be able to connect to an iphone and will record all the characteristics of the individual's kick.  Parameters include speed, direction, arc, and distance until stoppage.  This could be a coach's dream come true.  Now a coach will have a whole host of information to assess his players.
Maybe this could change the game a bit.  Maybe not.
More later.

Norfolk Hotel: Update

The old hotel at 89 and Pine is getting a much needed facelift. The new owners, a San Francisco developer, has committed a large sum into a renovation.   The project manager gave the Mayor a tour of the inside to provide a status update for the Tahoma community.   Much has been done, but much more work will be needed before completion.   Placer county has stopped interior work pending permit updates.  The exterior work continues with painting, staining, and carpentry ongoing.
A restaurant is planned for the first floor, similar to the former business that existed in 2009 in that space.  It could possibly be up and running by the end of the year.  Meanwhile, construction activity on site will continue, but at a reduced rate.
Stay tuned.

New Orleans Mayor Goes Down: Hard

The Court in New Orleans sentenced former new Orleans mayor, Ray Nagin, to 10 years in prison for corruption during his term.  Despite the pleas for leniency by defense attorneys, the judge decided to give the longer term, but not the maximum.
This case represents something unusual in the River City: a corrupt official actually going to jail.  He is the first of a long line of politicians who committed crimes while serving in office and then got off without any jail time.
Perhaps his timing was not good after the condition of the City during and after Katrina it had suffered so much .   Nobody had the patience with another corrupt individual.

World Cup Update

Argentina has advanced.   The Netherlands will play Brazil for 3rd place on Saturday.  The final will include 1 European country-Germany, and 1 from South America-Argentina.  It could be a close game, but maybe not.   After the blowout of Brazil on Tuesday, 7-1, by Germany, Argentina will approach the contest with trepidation.  With so many weapons in their arsenal, the Black and Red could be unbeatable.   Yes, Leo Messi is probably the top player of either team, but it will take the combined efforts of the many to win this contest.
Argentina won on PK's, 4-3, after Argentina's goalie blocked two shots by the Orangje.   In a contest of goalies, guessing right may carry the day.  Netherland's goalie got a hand on the last shot but the ball had such power behind it, it tipped off the hand, rose to hit the top bar, and ricocheted into the goal.  It's hard to accept after 120+ minutes of scoreless ball, but that's soccer.
Some pundits dissected the game, giving points to both teams for balanced attacks.  Nobody seemed to take into account the steady rain that forced the players to play conservatively because of the lack of control, and awkward movements on the wet turf.
The final will be in the Macarana stadium in Rio.

Russian Hacker Convicted

The US Attorney General announced the conviction of a Russian citizen for running a web site that sold stolen credit card numbers, stolen id's, and bank account #s.  He was convicted under RICO statutes that were established to thwart organized crime several decades ago.
His defense rested on the claim that none of the participants knew one another; therefore, were not co-conspirators.   The jury thought otherwise and the guilty party joined a number of others convicted in the same case.   The hacker had been arrested by authorities in the Maldive Islands a year ago, and has been in custody since.  He is considered a flight risk.
The Russian government called his arrest and conviction a breach of international law, but that was it.  In light of the Kremlin's recent activity in Ukraine, officials probably want to maintain a low profile.
Others have been arrested in the case and await trial.  Justice officials say the site took in over $100 million before being shut down in 2012.   Little comment has been publicized about ongoing RICO investigations regarding these types of web sites.

Obama Goes to Texas: Fund Raiser

The President is on a road trip, again.  He's going to the South, the Deep South.  He wants to tap into some Democratic Big Oil money to help with the elections upcoming that could determine the composition of Congress during the reminder of his White House tenure.   He's invited Governor Rick Perry to attend one of his conferences.  It comes at a time when The Tex/Mex border is again the focus of the Dept. of Homeland Security's ICE division.  Unprecedented numbers of illegal immigrants have been crossing the Rio Grande river seeking residency in the US.  Most of these most recently arrived are unaccompanied minor children who pose a whole host of problems for state, federal, and local governments.
Pres. Obama has asked Congress for $3.7 billions to immediately address this hot button issue that straddles the aisle in the Senate and the House.  Each side has constituencies that favoe law enforcement of existing law and humanitarian concerns of the others.  Most of those arrested are from Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.   The President is also asking Congress to change the law signed by George Bush in 2008 to facilitate returning those recently apprehended minors to their country of origin.
Advocates for asylum hope to vet those desiring to stay and placing them with relatives and host families.  Time will tell how this topic will affect Obama and his adminstration

Book Review: The Guns of August by Barbara Tuchman,1962

The centennial of the Great War, or the War to End All Wars or World War 1, is upon us.  On June 28, 2014, the centennial of the beginning incident was marked: the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand and his wife in Sarajevo by a 19 year old student radical.
In 32 days, after much discussions at the highest levels of Europe's governments,  Germany crossed the border of neutral Belgium with a massive army of 300,000 troops.   The army was on its way to conquer France and its capitol, Paris.
The author chronicles the 30+days of the opening of the conflict that embroiled the world with few exceptions, in a war that changed Europe and the world as it had been known until that time.   Her meticulous research, using primary sources, confirms the theories that the window of opportunity to prevent the war was small indeed.
From the onset, it was apparent that the Kaiser had an agenda and a plan that he and his generals were more than ready to execute immediately.   In August of 1914, a very hot August it was,  the Allies were sent reeling from the German onslaught.  Belgians did not cooperate and stood alone against the tide that swept through their country.   Expecting no resistance, the Germans were not pleased when the little army became an opponent just strong enough to slow the wave down, giving France a little breathing room.
The Germans dealt harshly with civilians and international reporting identified the perpetrators of mass executions and other outrages.   All activities were according to plan, and the Kaiser's troops continued on into France where they met slight resistance until the end of the month.
Despite fierce engagements, the French were ill prepared, and kept up a fighting retreat, hoping for a miracle.  The miracle happened.  On August 31st, Gen. von Kluck, in charge of the army closest to Paris, decided to turn east to pursue the retreating forces of France.    Exposing his flank, the French Gen. Gallieni, seized the moment and with the help of the British Expeditionary Force, attacked the Germans' exposed position.  Within days, the tide had turned, and the apparently unstoppable spike-helmeted Teutons were swept to the east in a flight of disorganized panic.
The war now was not going to end quickly.   Four and a half more years and 8 1/2 millions of casualties later, it would end on November 11, 1918.
Of course, we know the experience did not end all wars but set the stage for the 2nd World War, 20 years later.
For the next 4 years, commemorations will be held in many places.  Germans, generally will not be invited.   This book is highly recommended.

Brazil Goes Down: Hard

Nobody could predict this game or the outcome.  How does a team get blown out so badly on the world stage?   The loss of a superstar?  A mental collapse?  Does the coach have a hand in it all?
After the first few goals by the German side, it became apparent that Brazil was finished.  Down 5-nil before the half, any casual observer would agree, the hosts were done.  Over.  Finito.  Terminado.
What does that say about tomorrow's game?   Whoever wins will be the underdog in the final on Sunday.   Maybe the Dutch could match the Berliners, but doubtful.   Too many weapons for the boys from der Deutschland.

World Cup Update

Goodbye Colombus.  Or goodbye Colombia.   In a hard fought match of South American neighbors, host team Brazil bested Colombia in extended time.   The game ended 2-1  Brazil, but it was closer than that.  Neither team scored during regular play from the pitch.  All goals were scored on set pieces or a PK in the case of Colombia's lone goal.  The Red Shirts scored when young star James(Rodriguez) juked the Brazilian goalie and converted the PK which came after the goalie kicked the Colombian striker advancing toward goal.  He was awarded a yellow card for the trailing leg kick.   The Fortaleza crowd went wild at the end of play as Brazil advanced to the semifinals of next week.
Germany dealt France a blow to their reputation.   The 1-0 final put Germany into the semi's again for the 6th straight time.
Today's games with the Dutch side and Costa Rica will prove just as good.   We'll be watching.

Nederlands v. Costa Rica
At the end of regular time and extended time, the score is tied: Nil-Nil.  The 2- 15 minute overtime periods will commence in 10 minutes.  The Dutch Orangemen have had their chances, and the central American side has had theirs with many close calls.  The Dutch have been called offsides many more times indicating their aggressive advancing to goal.
It may come down to a shootout of PK's.

Supremes and Your Phone

In a unanimous vote, the US Supreme Court decided that cell phones are protected from unreasonable search and seizure.  The ruling underscores the privacy concerns of various organizations, groups, and individuals who brought the suit to the high court.
Law enforcement organizations will now be required to have a search warrant issued by a court before they can examine the data on an individual's cell phone.  The Court acknowledged that a cell phone is more than a phone but also an individual's data bank and deserves protection from the prying eyes of police and the government.
This could be the first of many decisions related to personal computers and private record keeping technology that has become so pervasive in our society and the world in general.  In light of the revelations of NSA data mining, the Court has taken steps to deal with advancements in personal electronic instruments and privacy.
Bravo Supremes

Putin, the USA, and BNP Paribas Settlement

Old Vlad the Mad made some great comments this week, relative to the BNP settlement with the US Dept. of Justice.  He claimed the US was trying to force France into reneging on the sale of the 2 new naval vessels to Russia.  These two ships, amphibious craft capable of delivering men and equipment on any accessible shore, would expand Russia's reach in the Med, the Black Sea, and nearby locations(Levant).
By insisting that France/BNP pay up, perhaps the French would give up the ship transfer.  Well, the bank paid, and the ships are still going to Russia.  Obviously, the Pentagon gave the go ahead, figuring the Russians don't have a clue about amphibious warfare anyhow.  It's a concept whose time has passed.
But Vlad, being mad, he likes to hear his comments and keep his name out there.  He is trying to deflect scrutiny for his Crimean Adventures of Summer,2014.  Russians like summers: no snow and they can move around, maybe go to the beach and take their tops off.  Sochi? Odessa? Sevastopol?
Mean while, back in Ukraine

Petro Poroshenko has unleashed his troops.  These Kiev fighters are learning the ropes of active combat.  After a few weeks of ojt(on the job training), they'll be a much worthier opponent of the rabble of eastern Ukraine, those makeshift wannabes who depend on Vlad the Mad for support.  Many would be Russians have left Ukraine for Russia, hoping to be met with open arms, lots of rubles, housing and school for little Rasputin.
You gotta love how Russians think.

Pancakes: Meeks Bay

Meeks Bay Fire Volunteers are holding their annual Pancake Breakfast this Saturday and Sunday.  Held at the firehouse on Highway 89, it's a nice way to get out of cooking for a crowd.  And, you can meet some neighbors and make some friends. And, proceeds go for a good cause.
Grill opens at 8am.

Argentina: Pay Up or Else

After full page ads by the country's chief executive, Kristina Kirchner, financial gurus are trying to assess the Argentine's next move.  30 days from Monday(the cooling off window), Argentina will again default on international bond payments .  The US court has ordered the country to pay holdout bond holders from the 2001 holdouts.
Try as she might to wiggle out of these payments, the bill is due and payable on her desk.  Not an enviable position for someone with several years to go on her current term in office.  Maybe if Lionel scores a few goals this weekend, the fans will look the other way for a week or so.  Don't bet on it, given the current rate of inflation, running 25-50%/yr.
Populist Peronism: not so popular today, even among the city dwellers of Buenos Aries.

BNP Paribas: Update

BNP published a full page ad yesterday in the WSJ.  In effect, we acknowledge the mistakes made, etc.etc.
Our Open letter in response to Jean Laurent Bonaffe,CEO.
We the citizens of the USA reject your public statements as nothing more than cheap banker's blather.  As a key link in the global financial world, BNP Paibas has indicated that it places profit above ethics and moral fiber.  Despite warnings, legal opinions, and plain common sense, your company did its best to hide significant business with sovereign nations sanctioned by iternational bodies and allied countries(USA).
The fine of 8.9 billions of dollars is a light slap on the wrist administered by weak-kneed bureaucrats in the US Dept of Justice and Treasury Dept.   The fact that you will not have to add to reserves clearly indicates same.
Your actions discredit your nation. your citizens, and your international reputation.  Coupled with your government's sale of 2 Mistral amphibious ships to Russia indicate that you, as a culture, actively flaunt world opinion, all for profit and status.
You have done nothing to enhance the standing of France anywhere in the Western world.

Tahoma Now

The   Beaches: Full . Campgrounds: full.  Boat trailers:empty.  Gelateria: waiting lines.   Ahhhh, Summer.
The Mayor stopped at Tahoe House for a coffee at about 9:15am:  madness-parking lot jammed, and worse, most baked goods were sold out!
But, we were able to get in and out of the market before the real crowds descended on Tahoe City.

NORFOLK HOTEL: Update
I talked with some workers who were hard at it on the job and they said the job is going silent after the weekend.  The crew is returning to Placerville until October.  This news was later confirmed by the project manager that I talked with while in TC.  Then, I ran into the Meeks Bay FD office manager and she mentioned a possible permit oversight.
So, despite progress, a little speed bump.  As an aside, the Norfolk sits across the county line: it resides in Placer county so the inspector(s) come from Auburn/Tahoe City and the fire inspector is from North Tahoe Fire(for sprinklers, etc.)

Sluchak Park

Saurday evening: Live music as part of the July live music series.  Also, TCPUD informed the HOA that the park must comply with ADA access laws.  Now the Tahoma Cedars property owners have a decision to make: buy it or not.   Could be interesting.

USA: Sooooo close.

The World Cup ambitions of Team USA were dashed by the Belgium side Tuesday.  The USA goalie,  for 90 minutes, kept the Europeans scoreless.  Then, in overtime, 2 goals were put up.  The USA answered with only 1.   Was it close?  Of course.  But the number of saves by the USA goalie speaks volumes.  He set a record for a USA team in World Cup.
Jurgen Klinsmann can accept the results and maybe see a bright future.  But, as the front page photo of team member Germaine Jones shows, it's not easy to accept defeat after training so hard, and playing so long on a foreign pitch in Brazil.
Maybe next time.  This weekend, the 4th of July holiday weekend, there will be 4 great contests at the quarter final stage.  Watch it.

Putin: The Answer MAN.

It's that time of the year folks: Czar Putin goes on the airwaves to talk at his people and answer their many questions to the best ...
