Corona Virus: Update

El Dorado county is experiencing a downward trend in daily infection rates. The total case rate of new infections is also trending downward. However, in 38 of California's 58 counties, an upward trend in new cases is causing concern among health experts. Part of the problem: a low vaccination rate in many communities. El Dorado County has one of the lowest percentages of vaccinated citizens of any county: 63%. What's the problem here? One can cite many reasons, but I would offer that El Dorado County is really 2 counties-East county and West county. The majority of the population lives east of the county seat in Placerville. More live in this area in the many subdivisions or suburbs of Sacramento-the state capitol.

The eastern region, including those communities in the Sierra foothills, are also found in that tiny section inside the Lake Tahoe Basin: the "forgotten" part of El Dorado county. For those of us included in the area, we often deride the poor representation of elected officials. Part of this sentiment comes from geography and part from populations numbers. Fewer residents live within the region and the basin residents are cut off from service centers during the winter season when Highway 89 is closed along the stretch from Cascade estates south of Emerald Bay to the section north of Bliss State Park. In the past, this section was closed for months. Recently, with a shortened season, it is often opened after 2-3 days. It doesn't really help.
