Wooden Ships-Some Iron Men:2015

                                                         progress on MATHEW TURNER- brigantine
A rare sight in California: a remarkable ship under construction, a completely wooden ship, 125' long, 120 tons made of douglas fir logged in Mendocino County.  Under construction for over 1 year, the hull has shape, and planking the sides is ready to begin.   Under a tent in Sausalito, volunteers are working like ants/beavers to make this dream a reality.   The Mayor is doing his part: machining bronze bolts to hold the siding in place.  There are over 1000 of these bolts: 3/4" in diameter and 2' long.   Most were made in a CNC machine, but some extras needed to be made(Mayor's role).
educationaltallship.org is the link for much more information, time lines, and volunteer info.  Perhaps a cash donation would also be made.  the project is estimated to cast $6 millions, with over $4 donated to date.   The executive director is Alan Olson, a career maritime sailor/ship builder.   The head shipwright is Fritz Baikal, a very professional wood shaper.
   More to follow.
