If it's summer, there must be balloons. They have not been around much due to high winds aloft. But, this week, they are up-it is up. In the photo, right in the center, is the balloon. The balloon is launched from a barge on the surface of the lake. This platform provides access to the passenger space in the basket, and is the location of the pilot controls, and communications equipment. The balloon is tethered to the barge with a control line so in the event of unanticipated winds, the balloon and occupants don't end up in Sacramento or Carson City. Depending on conditions, the barge is motorized to facilitate retrieval.
The flight provides a unique view of the lake and the surrounding Sierra. In addition to the altitude(to almost 9000', the balloon flight offers total silence: no engine noise, no wind sounds, no cabin crew with offers of in flight meals for $5.95.
This service has been offered from South Lake for several years during the summer tourist season(such as it is). It's not cheap: $250/ea. But, it appeals to a certain visitor who wants an incredible experience at Lake Tahoe above it all. Photo 8/1/15
