How Oil Gets to North Korea

Satellite photos revealed a shocking fact:  oil tankers are being interrupted at sea and transferring oil to North Korean ships.  Four ships have been sanctioned by the UN and will be prevented from entering any harbor of a UN country.  Several Chinese flagged ships have been named as possibilities for sanctions, but the Chinese government asked for more time to check on the disposition of said ships and a review of their recent activities in the Sea of Japan.
The US government is taking a new position on North Korean suppliers of all types of goods and services.  At this point, the availability of new sanctions is limited.   The Pentagon and Dept. of State are privy to the latest effects of sanctions and thay do not appear to have changed anybody's behavior.
Perhaps the Chinese government will make a civilized move.  Maybe not.

US Navy Puts Sailors on New Circadian Schedules

After two collisions in the last year, the US Navy had a 24 hour stand down from all missions.  An assessment of the situation was taken, and a new alert status was imposed temporarily to deal with the fall out.  17 sailors and crew members died in the two wrecks, one involving the USS John McCain, a destroyer named for the father/son admirals who were grandfather and father of the the current Senator from Arizona, John McCain.
An investigation revealed that the sailors throughout the 7th Fleet, the largest in the US Navy, are under trained and over worked.  The fleet has openings that far exceed normal limits.  Recruiting has been a problem in a work force that is essentially fully employed.  An analyst who has studied  sleep habits aboard deployed ships has noted that crew members lack sufficient sleep, more than any other military force.  Oft times they cannot log more than 5 hours of decent rest.  Their schedules are such that they more often than not sleep at different times, meaning the crew member has no regular circadian rythyms, which are necessary for restful sleep and good mental alertness.  Both collisions occurred in busy straits in East Asia.
Starting this week, all crew members will be given new schedules that will allow sufficient time for 8 hours of continuous rest.
This is a sad statement of results of Defense Department manpower budgets and an overall lack of concern for staffing needs in the overworked Navy.  Maybe the new President will address these issues through his Secretary of Defense Mattis.  Maybe not.

Putin: A Scoring Machine

Well, he's at it again, folks.  Mad Vlad on ice skates.  It has been reported by Reuters that in a pickup game near the Kremlin, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, Premier of the largest country in the world, can score at will when given the puck.  The man knows how to move the puck around the goal mouth(La Porta) and push the disc past the goalie.   IN an impressive display to celebrate the New Year, he donned his blades and hit the pond ice with some of his Kremlin Bros.  He scored not one, not two, but 5-F-I-V-E goals.  He is the M A N!   Among the fans were family and friends from various precincts of Moscova.  A few folks were said to have come all the way from St. Petersburg to see the man in action.
How many heads of State could put on such a perfomance.  I believe the man is in a class all by hisself.   Certainly he has no equal in Asia or North America.  Maybe in Finland, or Norway, or Sweden, or even little Switzerland, but that's it.  I can't wait to see the pictures.

A Lake View :Day After Christmas

Does this view look familiar?  It is another beautiful sunrise over the Tahoe landscape-even nicer than the day before(Dec. 25th).  Notice the mirror surfaces-no wind, not even a breeze.  Later in the day, a few sailboats graced the lake.  This is most unusual in late December.   Tahoe City has been very busy, with more visitors than we've seen in many Decembers.  The ice skating rink at the Golf center was hosting quite a few of those guests, with families in the fore.  The Mayor's family made a significant impact as the younger members donned their skates.  Even the toddler hit the ice with dual bladed skates.  She had a ball.
Downtown Tahoma was somewhat busy as early  birds took advantage of the new breakfast program at West Side Pizza.  A review will soon follow.   The coffee bar is closedfor lack of staff, a common situation among Tahoe businesses.  Too expensive to rent and not enough rentals available with no changes projected anytime soon.
Homewood resort is only open on the lower slope since the snow level above is too skimpy for any skiers.  Maybe the storm forecast for next week will change the situation and set up a great weekend for the MLK holiday.  We hope so.
Roads are dry and clean and have been so for weeks.  Snow on the ground is hard to see, but we expect much more in January, our traditional heavy weather month.   Maybe a few feet above normal would be nice.

Early morning: Dec. 26th, 2017, looking Southeast

Christmas Morning in Tahoma

Well, have a look at a California winter's day in the high Sierra.  A nice view over the lake toward Carson City, Nevada, the capitol city of the Silver State.

Amnesty International and Mr. Alexei Pichugin

London resident Mikhail Khodorkovsky wrote a piece for a national newspaper that asked that AI add a name to their list of "prisoners of Conscience."  The name Alexei Pichugin probably doesn't ring a bell, but it should.  He was arrested by Russyan police in 2003. Since then-over 5000 days- he has been held in prison after being convicted of "several murders".  Western democracies and Interpol have deemed these convictions bogus.   Russya hopes that his continued incarcerarion will lead him to turn staes evidence against Mikhail Kodorkovsky who was released from prison after pressure from AI and other international players/states.
Four years ago, Mr. Kodorkovsky was allowed to leave prison and the country after 10 long years behind bars.  This is how V.V. Putin plays the 'control' game among his chosen people.  "C  ross me at your peril'.  Mr. Pichugin wil not and has not deviated from his position: he will not lie to win his own freedom.  This is the srgument for his name to be added to the list of prisoners of conscience.  It is a sound argument in the face of Putin's continued efforts to control his revisinist policies regarding the government of the country-largest country in the world.
Contact Amnesty International and ask for the name to be added.

Book Review: Assembling California, John McPhee

Are you a geologist?  I'm not, not many of us are.  Were you aware of the revolution that took place in the hard science around 50 years ago?  50 years is hardly a whisker in geologic time, but we're talking humans here.
Plate Tectonics and Floating Continents
For those with a smattering of education, geography is among those subjects that sound familiar to many.   Within geography is the study of landforms or geomorphology.  Until the late 60's, landforms were thought to be the result of surface dynamics with influences from volcanic activity often found in belts around the globe.   The Pacific Rim of Fire is one well known area of vulcanism and island building.  Now all these theories have been placed under the title "Plate Tectonics".

Going to China? We Have Yu Covered

Big Brother is alive and well in China.  Recently, information has come to the world that new state security measures have been put in place in China.   Individuals will now be given a "social acceptance" score which the state will use to monitor and control activities of even its most lowly citizens.  All in the name of national security.  Of course.  This is the most often used excuse for widespread control of a population anywhere-state security trumps all.  as Mr. Xi consolidates power, he must resort to tactics to gain even more control.  These new methods underscore other state moves.  This past week the government has sent fighter jets over the South China Sea to serve continuing notice that the Chinese are expanding their zone(s) of influence.  Other South East Asia governments and the US are on notice that Mr. Xi is widening his sphere of control.
So, we know what will happen soon: gate keepers will appear to control even more territory.  Sound familiar?

State Department Publishes Report on Russyan Consulate in San Francisco

A major news item graced the national and local publications recently after a sudden order from the White House that gave Russya 48 hours to leave their consulate in the city of San Francisco.  This long established position has been a thorn in the side of the F.B.I., the C.I.A., the N.S.A., the State Dept., the D.E.A., the F.A.A., and just about every other government agency in the state of California and the U/S. of A.
Estimates are that over 50 % of the assigned staff were in fact, bald spies sent to gather tech data from nearby Silicon Valley.  The moves in and out have been monitired by these secret agencies for all the decades since the consulate opened in the 50's.
The 5 story building occupied a unique location well out of the mainstream of civic activities.  It is nestled in a residential neighborhood of the most exclusive properties in the City.  Most homes in the area sell for the many millions, when put up for sale which is not often.  Often called the "Gold Coast" where old money goes to die.   Pacific Heights is the home of many a well known personage and more than a few who are unknown and wish to stay that way.  (Warren Buffet has a residence nearby).   Politicians, lawyers, retail magnates, and assorted billionaires walk the streets with their pups.
The spy brigades don't walk the streets but carry out their assignments from the inner offices, going far afield to gather intelligence useful in the "new" Cold War" instigated by Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin.   Many of the spies were sent home.  Many were relocated to Wash., D.C.  A few to other more central offices.  Given the short notice of the order, it seems the White House wished to upstage Mr. Putin's efforts in__________________(fill in blank).
Pundits writing about the incident were able to glean quite a bit of fodder from the many notes from various organizational publications.  What will happen here in the future? It's anybody's guess, but while cyber hackers are running rampant around the globe, I suggest nothing will happen here soon.

Paul Ryan Says We Will Pay Less Taxes Next Year

The WSJ published a column by the young Congressman from the upper midwest.  As majority leader of the House of Representatives, it's Paul Ryan's  job to sell the legislation that will cross Mr. Trump's desk tomorrow or Friday for a signature putting it into law.  This is the first major tax law in over 30 years.   The Republican majority used the reconciliation method for passage, meaning they did not have to consult with the minority party because they hold a majority.  However, they will have to revisit the law w/i 7 years or it will sunset off the books.  Considering that the Republicans have a slim chance of holding on to their majority position beyond November of 2018, it is likely that this law will crash and burn within 18 months.  Dem Nancy Pelosi calls it the worst bill ever to come out of the House.
It appears, in the opinions of most economists, that this new tax law revision does not simplify anything, and at the same time creates a whole hosts of targets for tax lawyers around the country, whether in business or ordinary tax filer.
The meat of the law is too long to summarize here in the Mayor's column, but any survey of business publications, magazines, blogs, and reports will certainly  itemize the many sections that will affect small businesses and employees everywhere.   The big winners: large corporations and that includes banks and trading houses on Wall St.   Home owners and prospective buyers will take it in the shorts.  Live in a high tax state(NY, CA, NJ, CT, MA): get ready.
I can only imagine the furor that will be raised in 2018 as the Congress takes aim at entitlements(SocSec, Medicare, Medicaid, etc).  The uproar will be heard in Europe.  The new tax law eliminates the Obamacare mandate, or that portion of the health law that requires a penalty if one does not buy health insurance.  This takes the young and healthy out of the paying sector of healthcare.  Insurers see this coming and have been raising premiums wholesale across the landscape.
Give us single payer, now.
More after the Trumpster signs tomorrow.

Skiing is Believing

Night time temps are approaching 0 degrees-ideal if you are a resort owner.  Your man made snow can be added to all night long.  A bit of snow fell overnight around the basin, maybe 6"-8" total.  This is enough to paint the slopes white for the coming holiday.  This past Sunday, the NY TImes devoted its Travel Section to those ski resorts often overlooked by outdoorsmen.  Let's look.
Northern Michigan?  You must be kidding.  NO, people ski there.  Actually, lots of folks go to northern Michigan just to ski.  Boyne Highlands is the name of one resort with powder snow and good access.   This area is also called "the Up North".  Another nearby resort is located at Crystal Mountain in Thompsonville, about 30 miles south of Traverse City.   There are 58 runs here and 29 are lit for night skiing.   Hmmm.  Would you?
Another sleeper is the Green Mountain area of Vermont.  THe US Forest Service has designated the area as a locale for backcountry skiing.   Making trail is the byword here and many entusiasts embrace the opportunity to make a fresh trail in the wilderness setting.  The trails are well planned by the USFS and the layout is easily followed.   Nearby state New Hampshire has its own version of backcountry skiing at Granite Mountain.  An advantage in New Hampshire are high mountains in the Presidential Mountains.  However, they are not accompanied by trail networks as those in Vermont.
Say you would like some off season skiing.  Let's go down south, waaaaay down south.  Patagonia, that remote region of southern Argentina once noted for its sheep and gauchos.   The area is now more accessible than ever, with flights from Buenos Aries to the Andes Mountains via San Martin de los Andes and Bariloche to the south.   Nearby San Martin is the resort town of Chapelco, 11 miles from the town.  Here one can enjoy skiing among the trees on well groomed trails.
One great spot in the US is often forgotten by skiers, thinking that Jackson Hole, Wyoming, is a summer esort(good for fishing and hiking.  But it also has a great winter season with Rocky Mountain powder and lots of it.   There's quite a bit of action focused in the 'hood, much of it centered on watering holes for after ski.
Check out the entire Sunday Travel Section(nytimes/travel.com).

Kaspersky Labs Sues US Government

Well, now, Merry Christmas, direct from the Kremlin.  That's the message sent by Russya to the US Government via a lawsuit filed in federal court this week alleging that the US Government had no right to order all government agencies and departments to erase all Kaspersky Labs software from their respective computers and IT systems.   The action by the US follows disclosures that hackers of East European origin were breaking into IT systems in various countries, including the USA, and compromised high security operations networks.
Mr. Kaspersky himself says this is illegal.  Mr. Kaspersky is not a lawyer.  Mr. Kaspersky needs a little comeuppance.   It doesn't take a brain surgeon to see the connection between the Kremlin and Kaspersky Labs.  The man must think the world thinks like people from St. Petersburg, the seaport used by Russyans for a quick vaca.   Perhaps he thinks he will benefit by the publicity stunt he's pulling to get his name out in front of the world again.   Maybe Mr. Kaspersky should immigrate to Ukraine(no, too close).
After a brief review, I'm sure Mr. McMasters will exert his influence here and the issue will be thrown out into some filthy street where the lawsuit belongs.
     Merrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry Christmas

Minister of Latin American Affairs Report

Our Minister of Latin American Affairs will be in town and is expected to present his annual report to the Mayor.  He will focus on Venezuela, Brazil, and Argentina.  He will also include an analysis of the election results in Chile where they elected a new president this week.
We look forward to his arrival.  Our Minister of Aviation is in New Mexico, looking over some terrain in the vicinity of Bezos' 10000 year clock project, very interesting project, indeed.   The Minister of manufacturing will present a report on the completion of the hydraulic press in Los Angeles.
The Minister of Arts and Culture will present a report on latest developments in her field.  The Deputy Mayor will give a report on the Federal Conference on Lake Tahoe held this past summer and give an update on the various environmental projects around the Lake(TRPA).  TRPA recently sent out their annual news letter with updates.

Snow on the way

Finally.  Some snow in the forecast.  Yes, the weather has been excellent, but we "want" snow.  It won't be much, but it should cover the trees and the ground for Christmas.  Perfect, that's just what is needed for a "white" Christmas.
Make sure you have your backup supplies in place: batteries, radio, iphones, generators w/ fuel. firewood, flashlights and lanterns, and don't forget 4 days of food and water!.   I'm ready.
All resorts are open and ready for a big holiday season-the premier winter vacation time.
Stay well, drive safely(tires have tread?), and  DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE.
Merry Christmas

Alabama Election Results

The vote has been tallied down South.  Republicans :0,  Democrats: 1.  A new Senator has been chosen to replace Jeff Sessions and his name is Doug Jones.  His margin of victory was thin, but enough.   About 20,000 write-in votes carried Mr. Jones to victory, thereby putting to rest the idea that Alabamans would vote against their own best interests.
Of course, with the Republicans in Congress slapping each other on the back because they put together a new Tax Law that should end up on Trump's desk next week, the new senator will not have a chance to vote on this gift to corporate fat cats.
By this time next years, voters will know that this tax bill is nothing more than a sham: a gift to reigning power and financial interests of Wall Street.  It won't last because people will learn sooner rather than later that they are getting screwed, again.

Americans Want Street Named for Russyan Statesman

A proposal has been submitted to the Washington, D.C. city council to name a section of Wisconsin Ave. for a famous Russian statesman.  What's this about, really?   Well, the section of Wisconsin under consideration is also the site of the Russian Embassy.  The name change would only be for the section in front of the embassy.   This is not without precedent.   This was done about 30 years ago when a section of the street(not Wisconsin) was named for Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov , a well know personage who had been imprisoned by the KGB for speaking out against the Communist government of the time.  This time the name is of famous statesman Boris Nemtsov, a physicist turned politician who gained considerable clout when the old U.S.S.R. collapsed and a new economy began, introducing capitalism to the moribund nation.
When Mr. Putin took the reins of government about 17 years ago, Mr. Nemtsov seemed to fit right in.  But then he fell out of favor when he spoke out against the oligarchs and their insider dealing with the Kremlin.   Sadly, this turn around cost him his life.  He was murdered outside the kremlin by a group of thugs who claimed they had been hired.   Five men were convicted of this despicable incident.  Critics continue to point the finger right at the Kremlin and its occupants.
Any name change to a street in DC has to be approved by the US Congress, which manages the district.   Time will tell if this obvious protest move has any legs.
We hope it comes to pass.

Alabama Election Tomorrow: Dec.13

Well, voters will go to the polls tomorrow to vote for a replacement for the seat vacated by former Sen. Jeff Sessions.  The two candidates are Doug Jones(D), and Roy Moore(R).  Currently, Mr. Jones is leading in polls by 10%.  Perhaps a Democrat will be elected for the first time in the state in over 40 years.   Can it Happen?  Res. Trump sent out a robo call in support.  Former President. Obama put out a call in support of Jones.
The margin of control could come down to 1 in the Senate and given the state of affairs in the Senate chambers, this seat could change everything for the republican party's control in Congress.   The unseemly behavior pattern of Roy Moore in his past serves as a warning to all other candidates:  nothing is forgiven, nothing is forgotten, and you own your past and everything in it.  It's bad enough that candidate Moore was removed from the State Supreme Court for his behavior, but his inability to confront his misdeeds is troubling to all the citizens of Alabama.  Hopefully, a light will come on in the state's polling booths and Jones will win the seat.

Russian Deputy Premier Banned

Well, now, with the Winter Olympics just weeks away,  it seems the timing of a recent Olympic Committee ban is causing some anxieties within the largest country in the world(Russya).  Mr. Vitaly Mutko, the former Russian sports minister, now sits at the right hand(or left, depending) of V.V. Putin, Arch Kremlinista, dismissed Dr. Grigory Rodchenkov, Russia's longtime chief antidoping chemist.    This action started another chain reaction(of sorts).  Dr. Rodchenkov began talking about his planned effort to undermine the laboratory that was to screen blood samples from Olympic athletes in Sochi in 2014.  The scheme involved substituting recent samples of blood taken during the games with samples taken beforehand that were clean of PED's.  Dr. Rodchenkov kept a daily diary of his actions.  His tell all account was documented in the film called "Icarus".  The good doctor now lives in the USA where he has some protection from the tentacles of the F.S.B.
Now some Russian officials are backpeddling from their former position(s) that all of these accusations are no more than political posturing by the USA to demean V.V. Putin and all Russyans.  This position jells with the mental illness found everywhere in Russya: paranoia.   Two other Russyans involved are Yuliya and Vitaly Stepanov, a former runner and a former employee of the Russyan antidumping agency(ha).   They, too, live in the USA in an undisclosed location to thwart the efforts of the F.S.B. to silence them.
Mr. Mutko has stated that efforts to demean the Russian athletes is nothing more than a political campaign against the nation.   But, as we have seen, the efforts of the Russyan government do not end with the Olympics.  It is now an accepted fact that Russian cybersecurity services made an attempt to influence the 2016 US Presidential election by hacking and providing innumerable false news items on social media platforms.
Ahhhhhhhhh, Russya.  What a sad state.
Mr. Mutko will resurface again next year.  He heads the World Cup 2018 in Russya.   Good luck, F.I.F.A.

Russya Tossed From 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea

Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin is ready to walk to the Korean Peninsula to protest the I.O.C.'s decision to eliminate his country's participation in the 2018 Games.  His actions speak to his role as the Face of Russya, which has turned sour.
The Olympic Committee decided to invoke its power as the arbiter of standards when it comes to Olympic Sports and drug usage.  Because of Russya's unprecedented program in Sochi Olympics where a conspiracy of Dunces bypassed the drug testing laboratories set up to prevent tampering and thereby compromised all the Russya team's athletes.
So, now, only a few Russyan athletes will be "invited " to participate as "independents".  This means they will represent only themselves and their sport, not the country of their origin.  How sad.  Now all citizens of the largest country in the world will suffer because of the immoral behavior of the few.  And so it goes in Russya.  The 100 year old Communist curse comes back to haunt the Russyan peoples.

World Cup Divisions Selected for 2018 Cup in Russya

Mr. Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin was a smiling potentate at the ceremonies Friday when the drawings were made under the tutelage of F.I.F.A. officials.  Russya will be under close scrutiny during the Cup's many matches starting in the spring of 2018.  This propaganda stunt meant to promote Russya's image to the civilized world serves to highlight Mr. Putin's efforts to make Russya seem like a 1st World Power.  The Kremlin would have the world overlook some of the country's more recent foreign excursions.
There is no lacking of examples of Russya's efforts in this regard.  Let us look first at the Kremlin's efforts to destabilize the US by hacking into the DNC computers to search for information that could help the Republican candidate win the 2016 election.  This was accomplished with relative ease.  To piggyback on those efforts,  FSB staff made the overtures to the president-elect's family to inject discord among DNC staffers so as to sideline Hillary Clinton's campaign.  Just yesterday, former general Michael Flynn admitted lying to the F.B.I. in the course of their investigation of Russyan meddling in the election efforts in the USA.
Then we have the Ukraine invasion efforts that have caused untold casualties in the Donbass region in eastern Ukraine.   The conflict continues to cause many civilian injuries in the region.  The Kremlin will not discuss this adventure by Mr. Putin who is up for election in 2018 and faces little if any organized opponent(s).
Then, farther south, we have the Russyan army seizing control of Crimea, taking property from civilians who thought that the Russyans were comrades.  Wrong-they are just money grubbing Moscovites on a tear.   Mr. Putin has met in Sochi, site of the last Winter Olympics, with a number of players in the Syrian conflict where Mr. Putin has sided with the dictator Bashar Al Assad and his forces that have used chemical agents to kill opposing rebels in the country.
Then we have the conflict on the Arabian Peninsula that has the Saudi army pushing against rebels in the country that are supported by Iran and the Kremlin.  At this point, it appears that millions of Yemeni civilians will starve to death before any aid reaches them this winter.
So, yes, Russya is delighted to hold the World Cup: it makes Russya appear normal.   No doubt, when the Cup contests begin,  Russya will spin the whole affair as a great public showcase of Kremlin power.
I can't wait for the response from Western Europe and the rest of the civilized world.

China and Steel: And the Story Goes On

An international board announced that the world's largest steel producer, China, is selling steel at below cost, upending prices and creating international chaos among world producers and world markets.  This is not a new charge.  The US representative says that the administration will not sit back and accept this situation.
So, now steel.  First, aluminum.  It seems that our Chinese friends who believe the South China Sea is "their" lake front property, don't understand international trade.   Hmmm. Doubt it.  Maybe they think they are holding all aces and the rest of the world is holding crap.
Combine this situation with the inability of competitors to crack the Chinese market for anything that resembles a fair deal and we have a problem of global proportions.   Heap on the North Korea missile launch and you can see how the situation could easily escalate into trading wars.
     Your move, Mr. Xi.

Russyan Athletes Stripped of Olympic Medals

Four Russyan Olympic athletes were stripped of medals they were awarded at the Games in Sochi, Crimea, Ukraine in 2014.  All were accused of "doping" or using performance enhancing drugs.  This action continues the efforts of Olympic Committee members to remedy the illegal action of the Russyan hosts that conspired to defraud all athletes during the Games by altering blood samples in the lab on site.   The director of the lab, now living in the USA, admitted that the process under his guidance used a scheme that overcame committee efforts to make the alteration of samples impossible.  By breaking through security measures, the Russyan were able to replace the on site samples with fake samples provided by outsiders.
Sadly, the athletes who have now been elevated to medal positions will never have their "moment in the sun" thanks to the duplicity of the Russyan hosts.
     Oh, well, they are Russyan.

Louisiana Gas Makes It to Poland

Who built the pipeline from Houma, LA to Gdansk?  It seems like an impossible feat.  But wait.  Did it really happen?  Well, not exactly.  Poland has been searching for an alternative to Russyan energy suppliers.  As a significant consumer of all Russyan  energy market components, Poles have felt that they were under political pressure to pay more than markets dictated, given their dependency.  So, Poles looked for alternatives, realistic and dependable.  Where else than the good old U.S. of A?  America has become a net exporter of energy.  After years of being an importer dependent on the Middle East, fracking has turned the tables on imports.
During the Obama administration, the rules were changed to allow export of oil and gas.   Energy companies were quick to jump in, despite possibilities of markets being upended by the entry of new products on the world stage.   However, companies saw a need to offer products to compete with those sources that had a lock on certain energy-dependent countries.   Poland was one of the first to tap this new source.   The gas came not via a pipeline, per say, but a maritime pipeline in the form of LNG ships, delivering natural gas in the form of liquid petroleum gas.   Ahh, thank you to our technicians and oil industry experts who put all this together.  Now Russya will be more respectful of Polish consumers and Polish utility companies that can now buy product at reasonable market prices without the heavy-handedness of their eastern neighbors(Kremlin).
Too bad for you, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, 17 years the dictator of the largest country in the world.
     Have a nice day.

Chinese Hackers Indicted by US

Hmmm. Here we go again.  Seems that three Chinese hackers got into the email account of one of Moody's chief economists.   Mark Zandi, a longtime Moodys employee/economists had his emails diverted by the hackers to shone light on economic attitudes to some banking rules and regs.  More will be uncovered as the investigation goes forward.

Wells Fargo: Financial Train Wreck

Wells fargo got caught,, again, with their pants down.  It seems the ForEx division was cowboying along, breaking agreements and fostering a climate of excess in their pricing of transactions for clients.  They were overcharging in the fee structure.  The US Attorney General's Office is opening a broad investigation, as is the Office of Comptroller of Currency and Treasury Dept.  Wells says many of those involved have been fired.  No names were mentioned.  It seems also that executive bonuses were tied to goals and target quotas: never a good deal for clients.
I believe that big banks are TOO BIG TO OPERATE HONESTLY.
Time will tell if regulators learn anything this time around.

Matthew Turner: Update

rigger on foremast platform
electric motor w/ drive shaft
yardarm fittings @work
The brigantine Matthew Turner is about to get the last section of mast put in place this Thursday.  The fore topmast will be lifted into position with exacting precision.  It is a difficult operation_ the piece must be threaded through the foremast top band and raised into position, then held until the base foot is stepped against the lower section.  When it has been properly stepped, the riggers will spring to life and start the process of attaching all the stay cables: shrouds, fore stays, back stays, and all the running rigging hardware at the deck and at the platform position.
The steel gang has been hard at work, making the numerous fittings needed to hold everything above decks in place.  All the running rigging hardware has had to be made because of the unique character of the ship and the desire to be historically accurate as much as possible,  Many components could have been purchased from mainstream dealers, but these modern elements would look out of place.   Many of the pieces were made with the help of many different workers- some remote(Van Bebbers), some close by(the Mayor), and a few on sight at the tent.    With a metal shop in one of the on site containers, welding, brazing, shaping, and painting can be done easily.  Even some machining can be done under the tent.   Braiding cable is also done here near the welding shop where volunteers have rigged a scaffolding to hold the cable horizontally while it is being covered with protective elements.
When the fore top is in place, the ship will definitely have the look that has taken the crew almost 4 full years to accomplish.   Big Christmas Gala at the Bay Model of Army Corps of Engineer's building, Friday, Dec. 1.

Tahoma enjoyed the balmy weather with temperatures reaching 60.  Reno expected to hit 70, which would be an all time high for the date.   The Mayor was up on a ladder for a spell, fixing a gutter.  Now's the time, with snow definitely just around the corner.  The Truckee River is running high as the dam is releasing quite a bit of water in anticipation of a "normal" or "average" winter's snowfall.  We'll see soon enough.
Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows has opened, with early season conditions.   This means that only the higher elevations will have open runs.   The West Shore Pizza restaurant was busy all week- a good sign that vacationers were in a festive mood, ready to hit the slopes.  We can expect more of the same come December.
Have you checked your propane tank?  What per cent is it reading?  Enough for a good holiday season?  Now's the time to get what you need while the weather is still good enough for a delivery.
CalTrans crews are still around, getting ready to stop construction and to prepare for snow removal efforts.
How's your firewood supply? OK?  Stack it tightly, out of the weather, easily accessible.

Argentines Grieve Over Loss of Crew in Submarine

Searchers have revealed evidence of an explosion in the vicinity of the course of the missing Navy submarine.  With a crew of 44, the boat vanished on a routine patrol off the West Coast of Argentina.  Families have become resigned to the fact that nothing has been heard in over a week.  The military has had very little information to provide families.   The local units have been added to by international units with satellite coverage to aid the search.
Our thoughts are with the families.

Maduro Arrests Americans

Nicolas Maduro has arrested some CITGO employees.  The charges look like the administration is attempting to stem the tide of corporate disaffection.  He has announced that these arrests will stop corruption at the state oil company which counts CITGO as one of its divisions.  Well, now, isn't that interesting.  The American subsidiary will soon be taken over by international creditors who hold Venezuelan government bonds(worthless).  CITGO assets are the few abroad that can be seized by these creditors as they exist outside the grasp of Maduro.  Mr. Maduro recently appointed a relative of former dictator Chavez, Hugo to manage CITGO.  This does not bode well for the oil industry of Venezuela.  Soon, not much will be left in Venezuela except Cuban intelligence agents, people too sick to escape, and a disillusioned military.
      Welcome to Latin America.

Putin Meets With Assad

So, apparently Vladimir Putin is tiring of propping up the Butcher of Syria, Bashar al-Assad.  Let's talk.  I want out.  We have the Winter Olympics in 3 months and I have to be there.  I'm tired of giving you all this money and support   without much to show for it.  Either you stop messing around with the rebels or you're on your own and you know what that means:  Trump will take over with the C.I.A. coming to take you out.   What's your plan, Bashar?
The meeting is being held in Sochi, somewhere  in Crimea.   You remember Sochi?  They held an Olympics there 4 years ago, showcasing Russyan capabilities(such as they were).   Vladimir was show casing Vladimir as he prepared to invade Ukraine after the premier he supported fled to Moscow and the protection offered by the Kremlin.
Not much has changed in Ukraine.  More assassinations, more artillery bombardments, more Russyan casualties.  Business as usual for Russyans.  Will something come of the political discussions in Sochi?  Don't count on it.  Remember you are dealing with an Assad, notorious liars, dictators, murderers, and users of poison gas on civilians.

Ruthenium Over Europe: From Where

Ruthenium is an isotope that exists in a variety of environments.  Most of the assiciated environments are found in nuclear reactor sites that produce power.  Approximately 42 scientific monitoring stations across Europe reported that an unusual amount of this isotope was found recently in the atmosphere.  Fortunately, this isotope has a half-life that means it exists only briefly before becoming non-radioactive.
So, where did this particle come from?  Where was its source of origin?  Hmmm.  One of the major indicators of the Chernobyl Reactor melt down of the '80's was a discovery of radio active isotopes in Europe's atmosphere.  It was only after this discovery did Russya own up to the disaster on its soil.  It is doubtful that this is being repeated.  Monitoring is vastly improved.  But, it's worth remembering that these particles were sourced in a remote location and found their way into the atmosphere far from its source.
We might have to set up a monitoring station in Tahoma.

RT Today, RT Tomorrow a New Russyan Foreign Agent

After months of foot dragging around the various "intelligence" agencies inside the Beltway and outside the Beltway, the pwers that be finally told the Kremlin it's time to register the media outlet that is Kremlin sponsored to register as a foreign agent.  In other words, to register as a tool of the Russyan state that is used for information gathering and other subversive activities.  The response is typically Russyan: "What? How dare you accuse us of information gathering?" .  So, another step forward in the ongoing attempt by the post-Soviet era Russyan state to appear normal.  Good luck.
It has become a laughable topic among media companies that are familiar with the half-baked disinformation put out by the programming on Russyan Today, aka RT.  The program/show appears with all the trappings of a 'normal' news organization:  handsome presenters, colorful graphics, multiple talking heads, and even a few women to add some cred.  But the ties to the FSB are too obvious to overlook.
Enough, already.  Who needs more Russyan drivel in their day?  Nobody.  Not even the "Russyans" in the Donbass of Ukraine, those lost souls who turned up one day in eastern Ukraine claiming to be nothing but long lost Russyans.  Ha.
Russyan responses go like this: "Well, if you do this, we'll go after CNN, MSNBC, Radio Free Whatever, and Voice of America, and Disney, and, and, and maybe Armed Forces Radio, or MTV, of Nickolodeon, or Oscars, or Weather Channel.  You just wait, you Americkansky, you.
So, things are normal with our Russyan "friends".  Even as President Trump says that Valdimir Vladimirovich Putin assures us that he had nothing to do wit election meddling, despite what James Comey said.  And Robert Mueller, and Michael Flynn, and Michael Moore, and Howdy Dowdy.
Have a nice day.

Football: We Have a Problem

The NFL is in full swing.  College football is in full swing- Auburn defeated Georgia(#1) yesterday, and Notre Dame lost).  The injury list among players gets longer by the week.  Retired players are resurrected from their Barca-loungers to don the pads and hit the field.  The ever presence of QB Tom Brady does not give much reassurance to a crippled league, side-swiped by players protesting, players getting arrested for numerous felonies, and coaches unable to articulate the causes of their team's failures to execute effectively at game time.
And then, this happened.  With startling photographs of x-rays, of pathologists in the lab at work, and a detailed description of that work, a reporter announced the findings of the effort to the public on Friday, November 10th.  Millions of us.  The New York Times did athletes, especially football players(not soccer players) a great service.  The journalist provided evidence that can no longer be kicked under the rug by the NFL and the team owners, the Great Deniers of the 21st Century.  The fact is: football is killing young players.
Throughout most of the article, the story unfolds: suicide victim is brought to coroner for autopsy; the body is dissected; the brain is removed from the skull; the brain is examined; the brain tissue is placed under the microscope and viewed at that level; the evidence is found: CTE.
Dr. Ann McKee, a neuropathologist, presented her findings at the CTE Conference for Neuro-pathology at Boston University.  A Power Point presentation identified the key points in her findings.  She remarked that this particular brain will be studied for many years as a textbook example of CTE found in a 27 year old man who committed suicide while serving a prison sentence in Massachusetts for murder.  This was the brain of Aaron Hernandez.
Today is Sunday.  If you watch any games today, think of Aaron Hernandez and his brain.

Trump Goes to Vietnam

This is Mr. Trump's first visit to Vietnam.  Unlike 2,500,000 other Americans, Mr. Trump was able to avoid military service during his eligible years.  After years of student deferments, he was able to secure a medical deferment because of "bone spurs" on his foot.  Bone spurs.  Bone spurs?  He is attending a conference among Asian trading partners to discuss trade deals and dealing among attendees.
Maybe Mr. Trump will visit "China Beach", the former American rest center the fictional setting of a successful TV series of the '80's.  Nearby, is the port city of DaNang, where American ships anchored during the war, supplying the war material needed by the 500,000 soldiers, sailors, and Marines who fought so hard to thwart Communist efforts in S.E. Asia.  Maybe he'll note the beauty of the Marble Mountain monoliths that leap skyward just a few kilometers south of the harbor which held Marine observation posts on its crest, and Communist medical facilities underneath in the interior spaces.
I also doubt he'll visit remnants of the former US Tactical bomber base, now the largest air facility on the central coast.  Or the ruins of the former German hospital near An Hoa where the Communist guerillas murdered the entire staff early in the war because they treated anyone brought to the facility.
Maybe the visit will make him so uncomfortable he'll leave early; perhaps because he feels remorse for his early efforts to avoid serving with his fellow countrymen.
And today is Veterans Day in the United States.  It is a day we recall the losses from all wars in which Americans fought and died.

Remembering the Sochi Winter Olympics of 2014

Almost 4 years ago, the world was treated to an Olympics games hosted by our Russyan friends in Sochi,  a city in Ukraine.  The man who wroye the checks was on high display: Mr. Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, president of Russya.   With his gremlin smile(no teeth), he presided over the Games like a regent, enjoying a winter's interlude.   What wasn't on display were the behind the scenes activities of the Russyan doctors who were actively subverting the dope/drug screening efforts by the Olympic authorities.   The results predictable: numerous if not all Russyan athletes were dirty, ie. juiced with the latest undiscovered chemical PED's(performance enhancing drugs).
So, it was no surprise when W.A.D.A. announced a decision on Thursday that identified two Russyan medal winners who failed their drug tests.   They were also banned from future Olympic Games participation, and the Committee asked Russya for the return of the ill gotten awards.   Who were these athletes?
There were four: Alexei Petukhov; Evgeniya Shapovalova; Yuliia Ivanova; and Maksim Vylegzhanin.  Vylegzhanin won 3 Silver Medals at the Games.   Two more Russyan athletes were also singled out for violations and sanctions: Evgeniy Belov and Alexander Legkov, who won gold and silver medals in Sochi.
Mr. Putin's remark: "It's another American conspiracy."  Despite the fact that the announcements came from Sweden and Spain's committee members,  Mr. Putin went on to say that this vast conspiracy is run by US Media companies that have the largest financial stake in games coverage.  In addition to these allegations, he continued his ranting by calling US efforts to tie Russyan hackers to the 2016 US presidential elections a threat to Russya.  He also mentioned that these US efforts were meant to affect the upcoming Russyan elections next year.   With Russyans, it's all about conspiracies.
The root of all this comes from revelations by Russyan doctor Grigory Rodchenkov, who now lives in the United States.  He revealed the methods his team used to compromise the Olympic drug=testing system used at Sochi.  With the help of the Russyan Federal Security Service, they tampered with urine samples provided to officials during and after the games.  Upon further investigation, a vast conspiracy was unearthed that went back to 2011 through 2015.
Sanctions against Russya will be announced soon, and these sanctions will definitely affect participants or hopeful participants in the 2018 games in South Korea.  Standby.

The Fire: Sonoma County

The Mayor investigated the scene of Sonoma County's firestorm from last month.   It has been about 30 days since sections of the city of Santa Rosa were ravaged by a wind-driven firestorm that destroyed almost 9,500 structures of all types in the middle of the night and on into the next week.
Over 40 people were killed, many unable to leave in time to avoid the flames.  It was California's worst death toll in a wildland fire.
Larkfield Area near Old redwood Highway
In the foto, one can see free standing chimneys and other evidence of the fire.  As we rolled through this neighborhood,  it became clear that wind driven fire spare very little of the landscape in its path.  As we drove south on the Old Redwood Highway, we arrived in the FountainGrove area.  It was here that both commercial and residential structures were lost in minutes.  The steel i-beams of the hotel were all that was left after the fire rolled over the structure.
Nearby vineyards were burned, leaving charred vines as the only evidence of fire.  Cardinal Newman High School showed some damage at the street, but the majority of classrooms were destroyed in the east side of the campus.  It was just north of this intersection where the fire jumped Highway 101 and crossed into Coffey Park where hundreds of homes were burned in less than 2 hours.   The End of the Trail Trailer park was also ruined as the onslaught moved west before being stopped on Cleveland. Ave.
Signs in front of most of the lots here in foto indicated that EPA crews had verified that these lots were free of toxic chemicals and other environmental hazards.  Now insurance companies can go in and assess damages and reimburse clients who will have to navigate building depts. and their minions.  It will take years of work to restore these sites to something resembling what was lost.

Minister Does Mexico

Our Minister of Latin American Affairs zipped off to Monterrey, Mexico last weekend for a conference.  The focus of the effort was the trade agreement known as NAFTA.  This agreement has been in effect for almost 25 years and has matured into a viable institution that has many benefits, although many are not obvious.  Since Mr. Trump has taken control of the White House, he has openly criticized the pact and has sent various announcements that this pact is not to his liking and will be altered or eliminated.   This position has sent shock waves across our northern border and our southern border where businesses have bloomed as a result of the trade agreement.
Pundits from all over have turned to research that has accumulated over the years on the economic effects of this open border bond among the parties involved(3).  A closer look affords a glance at how the pact was sold to Congress and how the results compare to the provisions.  The actual results are mixed, with both winners and losers.   Perhaps the biggest winners are corporations who moved factories south.  Winners are Mexicans who found jobs closer to home.  However, these jobs often pay far less than they did in the US.  Is this a good thing?  Depends, of course, on whether you are a worker or a corporation/stockholder.
Meanwhile, our Minister will make his report soon.  He expressed his opinions privately, stating that his efforts were rewarded with timely information that can benefit Tahoma.

49ers: 0-9

There doesn't appear to be any saving grace on the Bay Area's former heroes. This is the worse record ever for the team.   Starting in 1946, the team never had such a start.  Of course, back in those days, the teams only played 8 regular season games.  Now, it's 16.   Hmmmm.  Lots of injuries, confusion about schedules, and social media problems for team members.  Not a formula for success.
The move to Santa Clara has brought its problems.  Contract disputes have marred the relationship with host city, Santa Clara.  The location itself is a cause of many of the issues:  too much noise, too much traffic, too few fans,  etc, etc.
Maybe next year, maybe not.  There are lessons here for professional teams.  But will owners learn anything?  They seem to be a hardheaded lot with too much money.  Perhaps it's time to remove the special license given the owners by Congress.  Read-M-O-N-O-P-O-L-Y.  Since it's a billion dollar industry, maybe they need more oversight.  We'll see, but don't expect Congress to jump in soon-too busy with the White House.

Election Tuesday

A few elections will take place around the country today.  A few new governors will be elected : 1 in Virginia and 1 in New Jersey.  Both will be carefully watched for indications of what's to come in 2018.   Namely, will the Congressional mix be altered or will Republicans maintain their hold on a two-house majority.  I would venture that the Dems, despite their lack of leadership and unseemly behaviors in the 2016 elections, will gain a significant number to control at least the Senate, if not the House.
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie will put his tail between his legs and slink off to oblivion after his fall from grace related to the Bridgegate scandal that caused a furor in new jersey and new York when his minions effectively shut down a highway bridge that leads to Manhattan across the Hudson River.  Not too smart.

Tahoma Weather

As we roll into the "Tween Season", we look at the forecasts with daily interest.  Snow or no? is the question.  Will we have skiing over Thanksgiving or do we have to wait?  These pertinent questions are a constant at this time of year.  Daily temps dip into the 30's at night and rise during the day to maybe 40 degrees.  We will watch for 'black ice' as rain falls then freezes at night and waits for the unwary driver who ventures out to work in the predawn darkness.  Hmmmm.  Careful, don't be complacent when behind the wheel.  Know the road, anticipate locations of hazards, pay attention.
Be safe.

Trump Does Asia

President Trump, aka "The Donald", is traveling abroad this week on an extended trip to Asia.  He will visit Japan, where he's already played a round of golf  with Prime Minister Abe.  Then,, it's on to Korea where he will demonstrate US resolve in the face of threats in the region from North Korea.  From there he goes to China where he will meet with Premier Xi who just had his term extended another 5 years by the Central Committee.  They will discuss North Korea and international trade, especially in light of the failure to join the TransPacific Partnership agreement.
After that, he will go to Vietnam for a conference that will include representatives of all east Asian countries, including Russya and its Vladimir Putin, Europe's bad boy disrupter.   What will all these talks bring home to Washington?  Nobody is will to speculate on the results.
In Danang, Vietnam, where the meetings will take place, a clean up is in progress after two typhoons hit the coastal area in the last few weeks.  Like our own hurricane season, East Asia braces for its version of a season in September and October.  It's a recurring feature of climate in the region.  Some scientists call this period the winter monsoon season, as opposed to its more famous brethren, the Summer Monsoon which slams the Indian Subcontinent regularly in the northern summer.

Saudi King Stirs Up the Troops

The King of the Saudis created quite a stir among his people.  He arrested or detained a significant number of the Royal family.  Many of those were accused of financial improprieties or outright criminal acts.  It seems that the long line of "princes" has gotten out of control.  New King Salmanhas decided it's time to rein in the family and  he used his supreme power as king to make it happen.
The resulting furor has caused turmoil in world financial markets related to the price of oil and the value of Aramco, the national oil company of the Saudis.
In an attempt to diversify its investments, the Saudi royal family(King Salman) has decided that the company should be taken public.  An IPO is imminent.  The price of oil per barrel has gone up to a two year high as a result.  The funds generated by the IPO will be used for investments at home-infrastructure, education, and job creation.  The population is tired of business as usual and is demanding more be done to help average citizens attain a modern society.
At the same time, the Saudi government has called a recent attack from Yemen(a missile that was said to have been destroyed) an act of war by Iran, the  country which supports Houthi rebels in Yemen's civil war.  Iran denies any collaboration with the act.
Stand by for more fireworks on the Peninsula.

Venezuela: End of the Line

So, the Maduro government has run out of money and there's no more coming its way.  The government announced that it will not make its upcoming bond payments.  With inflation projected to run at 1000%, the future of the country looks grim, indeed.  The policies that Maduro put in place have bankrupted the country, forced millions to cash in what little they had to ward off starvation.  Crossing the border to find food is the new way of life for Venezuelans.  It is sad for those citizens who have no power, no hope, and no future.  The incompetence at the top levels of government is astounding, but very real.  As they desperately cling to power, they increasingly depend on fantasy to get through the day.   As we say in America, "Hope is not a strategy".  NObody has told Nicolas Maduro, the sad excuse of a leader.  The party in power owns him, and they are stuck with him.
Tis a sad day  for all of Venezuela and its people.

Carles Puigdemont Flees Catalonia

The regional president of Catalonia, the rebel politician, has fled Barcelona for another town.  he's in Brussels, Belgium, and not exactly in hiding.  But he won't return on his own, knowing that a cold jail cell awaits him.  8 of his co-conspirators are in jail w/o bail.   Eight of these rebels will soon answer to a court of law.  Mr. Puigdemont says he won't seek asylum.  Ha, ha , ha.  Watch this promise fade as the jail cell idea sinks in.   He'll be screaming for asylum in no time.
Now the chickens have come home to roost.  All the bluster and political posturing will now bear fruit of another sort.  Defy federal law?  There are consequences, and they come with the force of the constitution.
The EU wants to be a partner of Madrid, not a partner of a breakaway region that doesn't want to pay taxes.  Barcelona is starting to act like Greece, in general.  Hopefully, the majority of Catalans will continue to come out in support of Madrid, and not the diffident minority who feel they are in control by their independent spirit.  Wrong, again, as they were 3 years ago.

Stalin: A Biography Volume 2

Historian Stephan Kotkin has published his second volume of a biography of mass murderer Josef Stalin.  This door stop comes in at over 1000 pages.  Not a light weight.  This section will cover the nightmare years of the 1930's, that era of terror that haunts the country to this day.

WTO Looks At China

US trade representatives have asked the World Trade Organization to look more closely at the trade tactics being used by China to skirt the rules of international trade agreed upon by signotors of the agreement.  China was admitted to the WTO in 2001, and since then has found ways to thwart efforts by other members to trade with China.  Whereas Chinese goods and services have found their way across the globe, few countries have been able to crack the Chinese market.  At every opportunity, Chinese trade rules and representatives have prohibited entry by foreign companies, thereby restricting trade and allowing state-owned Chinese companies to dominate certain markets.
One of the largest, most obvious problems is the international trade in steel and other metals.  Steel makers in China, with the help of state financing, have delivered product around the world at prices that do not reflect actual production costs.  This price support helps to eliminate competition in domestic markets where Chinese steel has been able to gain a foothold or more.  The aluminum market is another example.  Despite the WTO agreement, Chinese producers have been able to skirt controls by shipping product to offshore locations and then ship from those positions to large markets, eg. the USA.   Aluminum from Chinese smelters has been found in Vietnam and Mexico, sitting in yards waiting for shipping.   These tactics do not reflect well on the Chinese government nor its trade policies.  If the Chinese want to be a trading "partner" in good standing, they must put some value on the terms agreed to in the WTO.
Good luck with that as Pres. Xi takes the reins of his market again for another 5 years.  The latest Communist Party Congress in Beijing served to consolidate his administrative power and control.
See you at the Winter Olympics in 2 1/2 months in another Asian market.

Russya's Internet Research Agency

Mr. Putin's house organ the "Internet Research Agency" has had its name splashed all over Washington, D.C. this week.  US Congressional hearings questioned representatives of the largest American social media companies and asked pointed questions of these company reps.  The concerns reflected evidence that Russyan operatives placed misinformation ads across these platforms to manipulate naive Americans who visit these sites.  By spending rubles on the ads, the Russyan operatives were able to effect a variety of influences regarding dividing social issues such as immigration, minority rights, police brutality, liberal politics, conservative sentiments, and voters' concerns on the international role of the US.
Sen. Mark Warner commented that these same social media platforms have facilitated Russyan propaganda and disinformation on a broad scale.  For example, the Senator provided evidence that certain ads placed by the Internet Research Agency reached in excess of 140 million viewers.  Many of the ads were placed as early as 2009.  A considerable number were placed during the summer of 2016 when the US presidential campaign was in full swing.  Hillary Clinton Democratic campaign spent over $81 million, but may not have been as effective as the Internet research Agency's own efforts.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook commented that his company does not place profits above his customers.  His company came under sharp criticism for promoting fake news, misinformation, and sowing discord among its readers and site visitors.
Mr. Putin must be laughing all the way to the Kremlin each morning as he heads to the office where he can manipulate the levers on his vast enterprise called Russya-with a little help from his friends at the Internet Research Agency, aka Radio Free Russya, or Radio Dictatorship Russya, or Disinformation Radio Russya, or Fake News Media Russya, or Fun Facks From Russya Media.
Hmmmmm.
And what's happening in Crimea besides the takeover of Ukraine property?

Game Over: World Series Champions-Houston Astros

Charlie Morton gets a Game 7 win to add to his resume.  He pitched 4 innings and gave up only 1 run to a great Dodger team.   Despite many chances to score, the Dodgers could not make it happen, even in Dodger Stadium in front of the home fans.

Willie Mays Most Valuable Player Award goes to George Springer, the center fielder for the Astros.  He only hit 5 homers during the Series.

Game 7: Astros Lead 5-1

So, we are finished 8 innings.  Time is running out for the Dodgers.  Houston pitcher Morton has pitched 3 shut out innings and has taken command for the Astros, holding a 4 run lead.  The Dodgers have 3 more outs to make a challenge to the 'Stros.

Game 7-Astros Surge

Dodgers' pitcher Darvish gave up some hits and the Astros capitalized on same.  Astros' hot hitter, G. Springer unloaded on a fastball and drove it into the seats for a 2-run homer.

Game 7: World Series Finale Tonight

Sports junkies will have a feast tonight as the Houston Astors and the Los Angeles Dodgers  face off in the last game of a best of 7 series.   Last night's game did not contain the fireworks of the other 5 games, but it stirred the locals into a frenzy of excitement that will carry through into Game 7.
The last Game 7 for the Dodgers franchise came many years ago, 1965 to be exact.   Sandy Koufax was the star.   It has been since 1988 that the Dodgers were in a Series, so this long drought is over in one respect.   Now a victory would seal the contract for the team and the fans.
Nothing will be held back: "There is no tomorrow".   Managers AJ Hinch and Dave Roberts both know -"It's all or nothing".   The winner takes all.   To the victors go the spoils, etc.,etc., etc.  There will be heroes and goats on both sides.  One pitcher will throw the last pitch, one or two players will record the last out; one player will score the winning run, and some lucky player will hold the ball that made the game end.
It's only a game, but what a game.

Catalonia: New Elections Soon

Mr. Puigdemont, the provincial president of Catalonia  acknowledged that the decision of the Supreme Court in Madrid is legally binding on his regional government.  Ahhh, a moment of clarity fostered by the impending prospect of jail time for the rebel and his fellow rebellious rabble.  Prime Minister of Spain, Mariano Rajoy, has ordered new elections to be held in Catalonia soon.  The majority of citizens in Catalonia want to be part of Spain and have repeatedly stated the same.  It was only 3 years ago that certain political types said that an election would settle the matter.  An election was held, a majority voted for a central government by Madrid, but the opposition did not accept the results on its face.  hence, the rebels continued to foment dissent; and now it appears that outside influences may have come into play.  Scrutiny of political rhetoric on various web sites appears to have come from eastern European sources.  This is becoming obvious as the USA confronts the Russyan meddling in its own democratic processes.   When Spain resolves the current administrative crisis, experts will dissect the process used by social media adherents who were instrumental id stirring the population into separatist action, costing the economy of Spain millions of dollars in lost revenue.   The very idea of sentiments opposing tourists and other visitors from going to Barcelona is repugnant by any measure.

Russyan Election Meddling on Facebook

All the effort into Robert Mueller's investigation has not affected the other investigation into fake news manipulation on paid/unpaid accounts that were posted before and after the 2016 presidential election.  New information has been released that shows false information reached as many as 143 million Americans during this Kremlin-lead propaganda effort to sway American voters and to manipulate public perception of government in the US.  This is the stock-in-trade of Russyan disinformation campaigns: sow confusion, provoke fear among the citizenry, compromise authority/security organizations, and then send in the dictator.   How are things going in Ukraine?
The evidence is turning into a case of one thing leads to another, or where does all this evidence lead us?

The Perlan Glider Soars to New Record

Residents of Tahoma often find themselves in Truckee for a variety of reasons(work, play, shopping).  Often they cruise by the Truckee Airport with its new tower and administration building.  Nearby is the glider port that hums with activity every summer season as advocates of soaring descend on the airport to take advantage of the Sierra Wave, that local phenomenon that provides uplift for these soaring 'eagles'.
Towed to a higher altitude, the aircraft are detached and they glide/soar for awhile until they descend back to the airport.  A quiet, thrilling method of flying, usually alone with your thoughts as your only companion.  Haven't tried it as a pilot, but as a passenger only here in California and once in Hawaii on the island of Oahu(north shore) much of the flight over the ocean.
So now Airbus, the aircraft mega builder, has entered the glider field with the help of Steve Forbes, the wealthy aviation enthusiast who has established a few records with his balloon ascents.  Now he wants the glider altitude record, again.
Airbus has developed a carbon fiber model that has achieved new status in the world of soaring.  The Perlan 2 has reached 52,172 feet.  The old record was 50,727feet set in 2006 by Fossett and project founder Einar Enevoldson.
The record was set in El Calafate, Argentina where the glider was towed aloft from an elevation of 669 from Tola International airport.  El Calafate is one of only a few places on the globe where mountain waves combine with a high-altitude polar vortex- a phenomenon critical to providing enough lift to take a glider into the stratosphere. The nearby Andes Mountains provide the wall that is needed for uplifted winds.  Truckee, California is also one of the locations that one finds the right combinations.  Another limitation is the weather patterns. The required atmospheric conditions only exist a few days a year.  Weather scientists are required members of the team.   Next goal: a record climb to 90,000' altitude.  The project team is working toward that goal.

Buying Firewood: Again

It's that time of the year again to remind would-be buyers of their stock of wood for the winter season.  We all know there will be power outages to contend with this year, as always.  Last winter my friend Johnnie and his wife lost power for 4 days!  They almost froze to death inside their home- a home that's completely insulated.  How they survived is a miracle.  They couldn't leave because of too much snow blocked all access.
So, here we go.  A cord of wood is measured by these dimensions:
4' X 4' X 8'.  Got it?  Four feet by four feet by 8 feet.  A long rectangular stack, with little space between pieces-"tightly packed" is the term.  Looking at a 'cord' reveals that in a 3-row stack, each piece should be 16" long(3 x16= 48=4 feet).  Now wholesalers down the valley use bucks to cut their splits.  The bucks are usually 16" wide, so there's no mistaking the measurement.  However, however, however, the results are less than perfect.  OK.  But when the majority of pieces are 14"-15", that adds up to a lot of wood missing from the 'cord'.
Most local dealers often show up with a truck load, piked high randomly, then they dump it off into your driveway.  Yes, they will stack it for a fee, a fee that can add 20% to the price.  Not worth it, and they know this, too.  So you stack it.  It looks like a lot of wood.   But, does it equal a cord?  careful measurement is in order here: 4'x4'x8'.  It's not a nominal figure, like a 2"x4" piece of lumber.  It means 4'x4'x8', net. or 128 cubic feet by volume(not weight).
If your supplier won't guarantee the amount, find another source.  Most retail suppliers are lazy, quick buck artists.  As a buyer,, you have the responsibility to check their work .  If you are paying for a 'cord', make sure they provide same.
Good luck.

World Series Game 5

I'm speechless! And it's not over yet.  Astros 12, Dodgers 9, going into the 9th inning.  3 more outs for an Astros' victory.  (at 11:30pm).
We'll continue after the final out in Houston where it is now almost midnight.
  Update
The wild game finally ended in the bottom of the 10th inning: the home team pulled it out, winning on a base hit that scored a runner from 2nd base.  After 5 +hours, the losers trickled into the dugout while the home team reveled with unrestrained euphoria.  They beat the vaunted Clayton Kershaw, who actually pitched well for awhile.  Then the parade of relief pitchers began, and it turned into a merry-go-round as both managers, Dave Roberts of the Dodgers and A.J. Hinch of Houston kept up pressure on opposing batters with new arms from the bullpen.  It became a contest of who would be the last man standing as both teams slugged it out, pumping homer after homer over the wall(s).  Outfielders began to look heavenward at the crack of the bat, jogging toward the fence, fully expecting the white sphere to clear the wall.
Pundits speculate that there's something going on with the ball: flat stitching, more tightly wrapped leather; more or less center cushion, and other ideas.  Some write that the fact is more batters are swinging for the fences-everybody and anybody can hit a home run.   Strikeouts have risen as the number of homers has reached stellar levels.  The batting order is no more the accurate predictor of where a team's power punch is located.  The lead off man can do it, and so can the No. 9 hitter.   What's a pitcher to do: when can he relax as he rolls through the lineup?  That feeling of the "sure" out has evaporated, gone.  Every pitch must be thought about, discussed, and then thrown.  Late reliever Morrow, already tired after 4 previous efforts, came in and gave up 2 home runs and 2 more runs.  The Dodgers had nothing left to give, even after tying the game in the 9th with their own 3-run effort.
Tonight, Game 6 in Los Angeles.  Watch it, Tahoma fans.

Robert Mueller to Provide Evidence for Charges/Indictments Monday.

Special Investigator Robert Mueller has announced that he is ready for indictments related to the tampering with the US Presidential election of 2016.  His charge to investigate is finally bearing fruit after several months.  While not unexpected, it seems that many politicians felt that he would not return any indictments.  Surprise, here they come.
This no doubt, will be just the beginning.  Can't wait.
Indications are that former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort will be indicted.

World Series: Game 3

Meanwhile, back in Houston, the Astros took on the Dodgers in game 3.  After a one day travel break, the 2 teams clashed on the Astros home field.  The teams were tied 1-1 after the Houston team prevailed in extra innings in Game 2 in LA.  That contest set a record for homeruns and drained the life out of both bullpens.  It also set the stage for Game 3.
The Astros started off with a quick 4 run lead.  Then the Dodgers started chipping away at the lead, getting the score to 4-3.  Then the 'Stros added a run, making it 5-3.  And after a few tense moments, the game ended 5-3.
Today will a meaningful contest with the Dodgers hoping to even things up, and Houston hoping to add another win to give them of finishing the Series in Houston with out a return trip to California.

Catalonia: Madrid, We Have A Problem

Mr. Rajoy of Spain has called aces on the regional government of Catalonia.  After the regional parliament declared for independence, Mr. Rajoy invoked Article 155 of the Constitution and dissolved the regional government, putting Madrid in charge of  the economy, legislation, and police.
Mr. Puigdemont has not been detained but his powers have been stripped.  He no longer represents any part of the regional government.  So, the separatists have their results: a confrontation with the federal government.  The long-simmering separatist movement will now deal with the new situation.  After holding an illegal referendum on separatism that passed according to the local counters, the parliament went along, at their peril.   What were they thinking in face of the fact that only 40% of voters turned out to vote in the referendum?  Did they think that would not matter?  Did they think that secession was on the table?  Did they think that the EU would support any secession?  Do those few Catalonians think that the federal taxes paid to Madrid don't come back in sufficient amounts?  This profound ignorance of a political system is not found in isolation.  Most taxpayers would like to pay less.  Most taxpayers know that there is waste in government, all governments everywhere, some more than others.  Unfortunately, in Catalonia, the various factions of sympathizers for independence, represent a minority of citizens in the province.  As had has in the past, a vocal minority causes immeasurable grief for the majority of citizens.  Hence, we have a centralized, constitutional government that speaks for all of Spain and all Spaniards.  Perhapsmore discussions will lead to pacification of the minority separatists, but that will happen if they give up their "tribal" instincts which serve the few and not the many.
As the economy of Spain emerges from the recession of 2008-9,  prosperity can be coming just around the corner.  With unemployment still in double figures, the country is still laboring under difficult circumstances, with young workers still under employed.
Mr. Rajoy: good luck-you'll need it.

Kaspersky Labs Says They will Open Their System

Mr. Kaspersky himself has gone public: "We will give out our codes to show we are not in collusion with the Kremlin".  Good luck with that.  His business is imploding and he's trying to stop the train overtaking his operations.  Hmmmmmm.  The horse has already left the barn; too late to lock the door.
But he will try as clients around the globe take precautions to wipe their systems free of all things kaspersky.  Maybe he will learn something from this.  Maybe not:  he's Russyan after all.

World Series: Game 2

They are calling this an instant classic.  "They"(self indulging media talking heads, etc) join fans across the spectrum who recognize all the aspects of a great game.  It started slowly, a solo home run.  Nothing happened for awhile; pitchers settled into their routine.   And then, things started to get interesting.  A wild pitch, a hit, and a game tying run.
At this point, it's starting to resemble last night's contest-close until a tie-breaking hit.  Now the Astros are behind-3-1.  Then, another homer: 3-2 Dodgers.  More pitching changes.  NOw enter the dramatics of the late innings.  LA fans are getting anxious.  The closer gives up a game tying run.  Then another homer: back-to-back: 5-3, Astros.  Then, another homer, 5-4, Astros.  Then a game tying run, after the 'Stros were 1 strike away from a win.  Two more Dodger hits, game tied.  Extra innings.  No score in 10th.  Pitching changes: LA closer taken out after 6 outs.  New pitchers gives up some hits, more runs: Astros 7, LA 5.  More pitching changes.  Dodgers get 1 run back.  7-6, 'Stros.  More Dodgers reach base.  Astros finally prevail after 11 innings, 7-6.  They now travel to Houston for Games 3-4-and 5.
Enjoy.

Warriors prevailed a short time later over Toronto, scoring 10 points in the last 90 seconds, thanks to great defense and lights out shooting by Kevin Durant and Steph Curry.

World Series: Game 1

The Houston Astros went to Los Angeles with high hopes, but not too high.  They were facing arguably the best thrower in the game today, Clayton Kershaw.  The fireballing lefty was masterful through 7 innings and got the job done.  he held the 'Stros to 1 run and only 3 hits.  The bullpen protected the 2 -run lead, and the final was 3-1, Dodgers.
Although the Dodgers looked good, the Astros also won 100+ games.  They deserve to be there.  So, many more games to go.  Tonight Game 2 of the World Series, in Los Angeles.
Watch it.

Ian Frazier, Traveler of Russya

Smithsonian Magazine has published an article by Ian Frazier that encapsulates the Soviet experience that began 100 years ago.  Mr. Frazier is a writer, publishing articles in various publications including the New Yorker.  He has spent quite a bit of time studying Russyan history of the 20th century and before.  But his strengths run to his experience in the 21st century after the fall of Soviet Russya in 1989.
The current article details facts surrounding the revolution of 1917 and the end of the Romanov era.  While the Great War raged to its 1918 conclusion, the Russyan Army picked up their pieces and went home to help the czar.  To no avail.  The Bolsheviks, by luck and violence, carried the day, and introduced the whole world to collectivization, Communism, and mass murder.   The author traces the steps of many of the principal actors: Nicolas II, V. Lenin, Rasputin, and other members of socialist groups vying for power in a time of complete chaos.
The article is lengthy, but filled with nuggets of history that comport to tday's situation not only in Russya, but in Western Europe, Ukraine, (Crimea), and the U.S.A.
It is well worth the effort and will help readers understand the milieu of Mr. Putin and others from the St. Petersburg swamp.

Sorry, Your Visa Has Been Denied

This was the message given by airport security personnel to prospective traveler to USA, Mr. Bill Browder.  Mr. Browder is an American/British citizen and a businessman of some repute.  His visa was revoked because of a request came from Interpol upon a charge placed by-------the Kremlin.  Now, how can this be?
The story has deep roots, going back several years when Mr. Browder went to Russya after the collapse of the former USSR.  It was a time when privatization was the mantra of the new ruling class.  Old national assets were to be sold off.  Many businesses were liquidated; others were sold in stock offerings with the usual insiders among the first served.  Mr. Browder was an astute investor representing an investment fund with a commission to invest at that time.  He did well, well enough to catch the eye of some oligarchs who thought he was a bit too astute for their taste.  He was then charged with tax evasion after he was presented a tax bill for $250 million dollars.  He barely escaped the fate of others, many of whom had to languish in the local prison.
Mr. Browder wrote an informative book about his experiences, detailing the corruption that surrounds the Russyan government and the collusion of the politicians who approve of just who will be allowed to make money in the new post-Soviet era.  The new country is somewhat smaller than the soviet version, shedding a number of -Stans, Belorussia, and, of course Ukraine.  He joined other authors who chose to expose the dark underside of doing business in Russya after 1989.  The book, Red Notice, joined two others by Peter Pomerantz and Glenn Greenwald is producing names and places where the Kremlin took over businesses utilizing the power of the state.
Mr.  Browder was also instrumental in canvassing the U.S. Congress to penalize those Russyans who were directly responsible for the death while in prison of Sergei Magnitsky.  The Congress passed the Magnitsky Act, which placed sanctions on a number of key Russyan officials who had Mr. Magnitsky arrested.  He was charged with a variety of crimes; but his real crime was blowing the whistle on insider corruption at the highest levels.   His death sparked members of the Obama administration to take a closer look at how the new Russyan economy was conducting business.  As international oil prices collapsed, the economy tanked.   Many Russyan nationals went abroad, not a few to the UK where they had stashed much of their coin.
So, bottom line, Mr. Browder will have to back pedal a bit, and the MI5 Group will fix things with his visa.  It has been nothing more than an inconvenience, but it underscores the low level of harassment available to the Kremlin.
     What now, Mr. Putin?

Putin: The Answer MAN.

It's that time of the year folks: Czar Putin goes on the airwaves to talk at his people and answer their many questions to the best ...
