Book Review: Assembling California, John McPhee

      Are you a geologist?  I'm not, not many of us are.  Were you aware of the revolution that took place in the hard science around 50 years ago?  50 years is hardly a whisker in geologic time, but we're talking humans here.

      For those with a smattering of education, geography is among those subjects that sound familiar to many.   Within geography is the study of landforms or geomorphology.  Until the late 60's, landforms were thought to be the result of surface dynamics with influences from volcanic activity often found in belts around the globe.   The Pacific Rim of Fire is one well known area of vulcanism and island building.  Now all these theories have been placed under the title "Plate Tectonics".
