Roger Stone:Who?

Roger Stone:  ha,ha,ha,ha,ha,ha.   He'll be arraigned in court today.

Which Way HUAWEI?

Well, now, it's starting to shed some light on Chinese business: the new indictments, that is.  So, on Tuesday, just before the deadline for filing, the US Dept.of Justice asked Canada formally to extradite Meng Wangzou, the CFO of Huawei, the Chinese Tech giant, who has been held in Vancouver, BC, in Canada, since December 1st.   She's not a 'Happy Camper', to say the least.  The request was accompanied by several new charges against her and her father's company stemming from methods and actions taken by the company to evade sanctions imposed against Iran.  Underlying the indictments is more focus on the activities of China with the aid of the company to become the global tech leader in the expansion of information gathering by the Chinese government.  This is alleged to take place in methods of inserting chips into all Huawei products manufactured at home and sold abroad either through other companies using their product or in their own products.  Huawei is a leader in the iphone market.
All of this takes place during an effort by the White House and its trade negotiators as they attempt to deal with China's unfair business practices of stealing trade secrets and forcing foreign companies to yield to demands for access to proprietary knowledge and patents.  It has long been known that China's government policy has been to make these demands while avoiding similar rules abroad.   As the Chinese economy shrinks because of excess debt, these policies have been exposed for what they truly are: bold statements in an attempt to break the leadership of the West, from the US to Western Europe.   In a further test of new policies, China has been courting its border partner, Russya recently.   A deal announced this year indicates that energy from Russya will now go by pipeline directly to China.   Also, Russya is selling new air defense systems to the Beijing military.  This is also related to the affairs of the other Chinese tech giant ZTE, which was almost ruined last year until Trump was convinced that certain US products could be sold to the company, postponing bankruptcy.
All of these activities were foreseeable as observers have warned for years about the business tactics imposed on Chinese businesses by Beijing.  Pres. of China, Xi Ji Ping has only enhanced these practices and increased his own power to impose them.  A new president in the US 2 years ago was a convenient time to continue these efforts unabated.   Soon, one could expect China to be evicted from the WT, a member since 2001.   If you don't play by the rules, you're out.  Xi JP knows this.  Perhaps his economy will suffer as a result and his power grab at the top will be questioned by the pretenders to the throne.   How now, HUAWEI?

Cold Snap to hit US MIdwest/Central States

Cities and towns across the Great Plains are bracing for an Arctic blast of cold air that could see temperatures plunge to minus 30 degrees.  This air mass could set records across the Dakotas, Kansas, Nebraska, Minnesota, Iowa, and Oklahoma.  Local folks are being advised to take all necessary steps to ensure safety measures are in place before tomorrow evening.   Weather forecasting has been very accurate in recent years and the citizery has taken steps to follow the advice of the US Weather Bureau.
While satellite images do not freeze temperatures, they can put locations of readings into graphics that identify those areas hardest hit by storms and winds.
Folks in Tahoma know how to watch the weather; we hope our fellowa in the Mid West follow the instructions to avoid a catastrophe.

Afghanistan: Is the 17 year War Almost Over?

Talks between the US and the Taliban have reached agreements.   After years of fighting over the administration of the war torn country, it appears that the end is near.  representatives of Afghanistan, the US, and the Taliban insurgents have been meeting and discussing an armistice to end the hostilities.   No announcements have been made but the beleaguered country seeks and end to endless strife among its various ethnic factions.
After 17 years and thousands of deaths among fighters and civilians, an end could be imminent.  This would accomplish many things for all parties involved:  1) a peace of sorts, 2) an immediate cessation of injury and death among the population, 3) a withdrawal of foreigners, 4) a stability created to facilitate the rebuilding of cities and towns across the landscape, 5) a return of refugees from surrounding countries and abroad, 6)  an increase in support of national leaders, 7) an increase in business and agricultural production, 8) an increase in foreign investments, 9) an a decrease in insurgent activities and suicide bombings nationwide.
All of these are to the good of the people.  We will be watchful.

US Imposes New Sanctions on Venezuela

So,  now a new round of sanctions against Venezuela's oil industry.  The US announced more sanctions against the Maduro government.  As the illegal dictator struggles to maintain his lofty position, the US is squeezing his one source of foreign exchange- the country's oil.   Despite earlier sanctions, these additional moves will again restrict the use of foreign exchange.  When Maduro tried to remove 1.5 billion dollars of the gold reserves held in London, they were frozen and put under control of an federal court.   Other assets were also restricted or denied access to foreign accounts.   While this puts pressure on the population, it serves notice that Maduro must step aside as the leader of the government.
He is a   hard head advised by idiots who want nothing more than to preserve their own privilege.  Sound familiar?   The military support is starting to fracture:  the military attache' in Washington, D.C., at the Embassy of Venezuela has declared his support of the new leader of the appointed government. Mr. Guaido.  Col.  Silva says he no longer can support this illegal president who was sworn in 2 weeks ago.   More than 3 million Venezuelans have fled the country creating a vast refugee problem throughout the Americas.  All countries have been affected.  The 'LIMA' group of countries have called for new elections in the capitol by February 8.   We'll see what happens.

Don't Cry For Me Venezuela

Well, things are getting interesting down South.  In that sad place called Venezuela, folks are in a quandary:  which government will I support-that of the dictator Mr. Maduro or the new government formed last week by Mr. Guaida?  It seems that US Vice President Pence explained the position of the US: We will support the new government of Mr. Guaida as the legitimate leader of Venezuela.  Mr. Maduro and his followers are illegitimate.   The military came out and said it will follow the Maduro government despite its obvious failings in an attempt to follow the socialist policies of Hugo Chavez, the late leader.
On the heels of these developments, several other nations came out in support of the Maduro regime.  Who can this be?  Who would publicly put their names on this position?  What bizarre leaders would want to be associated with this depraved leader of a failed state?  What countries underscore their own illegitimacy by siding with this idiot?  Well lets list them:  Cuba, Bolivia, Russya(no surprises here); China(of course), and our Middle East bad actor, home of the perverse government of Islamists, Iran.  So, now we have these nation states jumping in where they have no real interest other than to antagonize the US and its position as world leader.  Perhaps Russya will offer protection to the millions of refugees facing starvation in Venezuela, perhaps not.   Perhaps Iran will offer the refugees a home away from home?  Oh, they are largely Christian-won't work.  Maybe China will offer a refuge, like they have offered their own Uighars?  I don't think that will happen.
The sad events of Venezuela underscores the plight of the people who live there who want food, medicine, and freedom from fear from an oppressive government bent on failed policies of socialism at any price.   Perhaps the "New" government will start by evicting the well-entrenched Cuban operatives that run the country from the shadows.  Time will tell.

Book Review: Travels in Siberia, Ian Frazier

Have you ever wanted to walk through Siberia?  How about a leisurely road trip across 11 time zones?  What would you think of temperatures plunging to -40 degrees below zero?  Cold, yes.  Think about it, just for awhile.
Noted author, Ian Frazier, has made many trips to Russya.  After some discussion with his family, he decided it was time to step up and do it: travel across the country, come what may.  With contacts that he made, he planned a driving trip from St. Petersburg to Vladivostok on the Pacific Coast, a trip almost 6,000 miles across Siberia.   He did it, not once, not twice, but 3 times.  Details were published in this account from his diary.

Warriors Win a Close One

In their last home game for the next two weeks, the Golden State Warriors hosted New Orleans in what turned out to be a close game.  The warriors were pressured by some great shooting by the Pelicans from the Big Easy.  They stayed close through the first half and pulled ahead by as much as 17 points in the 3rd quarter.  The Warriors were cold and couldn't seem to get going.  Then, 3rd quarter magic began to take over.
Coach Kerr was juggling his line up, moving defense in and out, resting Steph Curry who was in early foul trouble.  K Durant was not having a great night, and bench players needed to step up, and they did.   As the Golden Staters pulled close, the Pelicans began to get a little careless: the defense failed as the 3 point shooters found the mark.   By the end of the 3rd, the warriors had eclipsed the Mud Bugs and the crowd was now back in the game.
Steph Curry got hot  and was able to keep the margin intact as the clock counted down.  The game ended 145-140, Golden State.  Nice game to watch.
Draymond Green had a big night with 17 points and 14 assists and several blocked shots.  He made 4 -3 pointers!  The second half is 6 games in and the Warriors have yet to lose.

New Caravans Start Out for US Borders

Adding fuel to the fire of a border wall question, it was announced that two groups are on the move north from Nicaragua, with the US their goal.  Mr. Trump has not tweeted yet, but Democrats can only hope that he will inject some flippancy that will ignite further derision from the liberal left who depend mightily on his efforts to shoot himself in the foot.

Poor Theresa May: Brexit Vote Goes Against Her Again

The UK's Parliament overwhelmingly rejected hep Brexit plan yesterday, as expected.  Today, a vote of confidence will be taken to see if she can survive another couple of months.  The Brexit action is scheduled to go down on March 29th.   Apparently, nobody can really assess what implications are involved in a Brexit deal: the 600+ page plan no doubt is a dense tome readable to a few professors of economics and even fewer business types who depend on the trade rules for their livelihood.
Maybe jeremy Corbin, the staunch Brexiteer, can come up with a plan.  Isn't that laughable?  What a kook!  The man is devoid of a brain, let alone a plan that makes any sense.  The poor voters were offered a Hobbsen Choice 2 years ago when they voted 52-48% to leave the EU market.  Now, they appear to be wavering:  "What have we done?", they ask.  Interesting question that: nobody can say for sure what they've done other than expose the incompetence of the sitting government, not just in London, but also in Brussels.  Fortunately, the Pound seems to be holding up, at least for the while.  When the final results come to be known, the Pound will tumble down, down, down to reflect its true value in Europe and the world.
Good luck Mrs. May.

Traveling on Interstate 80: Caution Advised

A brace of winter storms is forecast to slam the Sierra starting tonight.  Weathermen predict 3'-5' feet of new snow at Donner Summit, a bit less in Trckee and the West Shore.  We Tahomans are not surprised with this new information, we live here.  But, we are cautious and not foolhardy: we drive when we have to; we carry chains and use them when necessary; and we drive with prudence, observing conditions at all times.
So: a word to the wise: don't challenge Mother Nature; don't drive over Donner Summit at midnight tonight-better you wait a day or two.   Make a call, send an email, why take the chance.
Be safe-be aware.

Hacking Update: DOJ Indicts Ukrainian for Trading on Inside Information

After and investigation into illegal trades, the SEC notified the DOJ that they had ample evidence that a young man with Ukrainian roots had profited from restricted information gained from hacking into the SEC's database(s) used by corporations required to file timely reports.  The SEC has egg on its face because it has reprimanded companies and corporations that are publicly traded to assure that their computers are protected from hackers with the latest protective software.   The hacker was able to use simple means to gain access, placing account names in the names of family members and others who lived outside the US.   Millions of dollars in illicit gains were made by sevral participants in the scheme.
Named were the following individuals:  David Kwon;  Sunglin Cho; Andrey Sarafanov;  Ivan Olefir;  Victoria Vorochek; and Igor Sabodakha.  Two companies involved were identified:  Spirit Trade and Capyield.   The principal involved is Oleksander Ieremenko and he worked with traders in Russya, Ukraine, and Los Angeles.  Stupidly, but not out of character, the young man bragged on social media of his "successes".   He had been involved in an earlier hacking effort identified in the recent SEC complaint.   Mr. Ieremenko might wish that he was not so cavalier about his hacking efforts.  He will no doubt have to look for a new line of work after he is extradited to the US, tried and convicted of breaking the law.   Perhaps a stiff fine will accompany his prison sentence, probably 10 years or so.  He'll only be about 38 when released so he can return to Kiev and resume a new life as a convicted felon who paid for his crimes.   His Russyan compatriots will only laugh at his fate as they are able to enjoy their freedoms in the largest country in the world, the one that is losing population at a terrific rate and stands to achieve a total population of about 110 million by 2050.  Such a fall will only increase as 100 year old leader Vladimir Putin takes off his shirt and wades into a stream to catch a trout held by one of his staff while the other member holds the camera.

Venezuelan Surprise: New Head of State

Well, perhaps things will begin to change in South America-for the better.  An interim president has been named by the legislature to replace that bumbling incompetent Nicolas Maduro', the late Hugo Chavez' successor who has essentially destroyed the economy and driven the population to the brink of starvation.  After prodding by the Organization of American States and another multilateral organization of Latin American Countries, the legitimate Parliament(as opposed to the Maduro-created fake parliament) named a 35 year old member to assume the role of President until an election can be called to replace the idiot in Caracas.
His name is Juan Guaido', a little known legislator, who will be tasked to preside over a change in government that will appeal to other countries in Latin America and the US.   It is hoped that this will bring the population and its voters to renounce the latest presidential election that put Maduro in power for another 6 years.  The election was widely seen as being a sham with little credibility beyond maduro's inner circle of cronies and toadies.   The Chief Buffoon in Caracas continues to govern as though he spends his time reading comic books and horoscopes.   He could write the textbook on how to ruin a country that has a vast resource within its borders(petroleum reserves).   The next step will be Mr. Guaido's efforts to freeze the country's foreign assets until the political changes can be put into effect.   He has promised amnesty to the military if it gets behind his mission to replace the existing illegitimate government in Venezuela.   US vice president Mike Pence spoke with the interim president to offer support and said the US is considering tightening sanctions against the Maduro government.   In a move designed to intimidate Mr. Guaido, masked men briefly held Mr. Guaido hostage for an hour after he was grabbed near his vehicle on the weekend by members of the secret police, the Sebin, the stooges stocked by Cubans, who conduct subversive ops for the president.
The people of Venezuela are focused on survival, seeking food for themselves and their families.  They have resorted to crossing borders to trade for foodstuffs due to lack of provisions available within the borders of the country.  Relief does not appear imminent, but perhaps this latest effort from the National Assembly will spark a beginning.

Nicaraguan President has Defector

The Chief Justice of the Nicaraguan Supreme Court has resigned.   In a sharply worded 3 page letter, he stated that he can no longer stay on the Court as long as Pres. Ortega continues to run the country.   Along with his wife, who is the country's vice president, Mr. Ortega has made all the rules governing the country's administration and political landscape in which corruption and violence has marked his efforts at control of the citizenry.  The future does not look bright under Mr. Ortega or his appointees.

Minister of east Asian Affairs in Hong Kong

Our traveling Minister in East Asia made a trip recently to the old British colony of Hong Kong.  This great city on the south east coast of China continues to be a financial and cultural center for most of east Asia.  Our Minister looked over the various infrastructure improvements made since the city was turned over to China some 25 years ago.   Despite assurances from Beijing that the city would retain its political stature as an autonomous region,  recent actions have indicated that that viewpoint has been altered to reflect Pres. Xi JP's power consolidation and extension of direct control over government operation and oversight of Hong Kong, which includes Macao, the old Portuguese colony across the harbor from HK.
Now our minister, fluent in Portuguese decided to include a visit to the former gambling den of Chinese bettors and gamers.  He expected to find an overlay of the former Portuguese influence.  He has been disappointed in this endeavor:  there's not much left of the former European country's presence.   Number one:  nobody speaks or understands the Portuguese language.  How can this be?  Simple: there aren't any Portuguese left in the city and nobody has learned to speak the language because there's no need.  However, No.2, all the signage is in Portuguese.  Hmmmm.  What's going on here?   Apparently, there's an attempt to place a veneer of provincial flavor here to attract visitors.
(Exotic Macao?).

Murder Mountain: by Netflix

So, Netflix puts some money where its mouth is, this time in a docu-drama made for its vast audience of streamers.  Californians are familiar with cannabis, cannabis growers, cannabis smugglers, cannabis laws, cannabis law enforcers(federal and state), cannabis medicinals, cannabis edibles, etc.,etc.  We know cannabis; really, since the '60's with hippies.  In 1998, medicinal marijuana was legalized in California for sale and for medical treatment to approved patients.  Thus began the long road to legalization of recreational usage.  And here we are: growers, users, sellers, enforcers, politicians, and judicial figures all coping with these changes.  Back in the growing fields, things are changing also: new participants, new money, and new approaches are appearing all over the hub of the industry: Humboldt County.   And Netflix wants in.  They got in with a series devoted to a known incident of murder.
In true docu-drama style, the producers took one incident and used it as a springboard to the story.  Law enforcement, in the form of the county sheriff, was part of the drama.  The sheriff did not appear in the series as the most astute investigator.   In his opinion, much of the story was omitted, which of course, would have given a different side to the producers' spin.  It has long been known that years of federal attemps to eradicate the business met with regular failure to halt anything on  the ground.  Despite a few publicity busts, it was business as usual among local growers/packagers/trimmers/harvesters.   With the lumber business in sharp decline across the Northwest, not much else was happening in NorCal.  Most of NorCal is forested, mountainous, and underpopulated by any measure.  Hard to get to, and short of all services, the area remains a backwater: favored by growers for all the same reasons.
So, a series focused on all the above.  The local rag, the Eureka TIMESSTANDARD, has written extensively on the industry, making the effort to keep locals abreast of all involved, for better or worst.   The Federal law enforcement agencies have backed off California, given the State laws in place and the attitudes of the state judicial system which is overcrowded to begin with in the 21st century.  Until the federal government changes the designation of marijuana as a class 1 drug, not much will change.   Yes, it makes for cheap entertainment for non-Californians; but for us locals: B-O-R-I-N-G.
Maybe Netflix will do a story on Grandma and Grandpa who use lots of high quality grow that has altered their retirement life:it's different!
What next Netflix?

Book Review: On Desperate Ground, Hampton Sides, 2018

Korea: we hear more than a little about the place today.  President Trump and North Korea dictator, Kim Un, share the spotlight on alternate days, discussing each others' position on nuclear arms and trade sanctions imposed.
In 1950, Korea climbed on to the front pages of newspapers all over the world when the North Korean army, directed by Kim Un's grandfather, marched across the 38th parallel, the agreed border separating north from south, and proceeded to roll up the South Korean army and the few US Army defenders.   Within weeks, the US was pinned against the wall at the east coast port city of Pusan.  Gen. Douglas Mac Arthur, situated in Japan, was completely caught off guard and struggled to come up with a plan.   Pres. Harry Truman, too, was caught unawares.   He met with his Chiefs of staff to come up with a plan.  The plan included a UN backed coalition that could possibly stem the tide; but little time was available to put the plan to work.   Desperate calls for help  came to MacArthur in Tokyo, surrender became a word put on the table.  MacArthur could not think of a way out of this situation, at first.    Then, he came up with a plan.
He had worked with Marines during WW II, observing their Esprit de Corps, their elan', their "can do" attitude from top to bottom.  He had one Marine infantry division close at hand, the 1st Marine Division, a veteran organization that fought from Guadalcanal to Okinawa, the first and last battles of WW II.   He had a veteran general, Maj. Gen. O.P. Smith in charge.  His plan:  make an end run around the North Koreans and pinch closed their supply lines near Seoul, the capitol.  A nearby harbor could put the Marines ashore within striking distance of the city, about 40 miles inland from the sea.  It was a hard sell to the Marine generals as they mentioned how difficult an amphibious assault is under ideal circumstances and conditions.  At Inchon, many obstacles existed to thwart just a landing: significant tidal differences in a 24 hour period, narrow channels for landing craft and support vessels, a seawall over 10' high, and a river that needed to be crossed before gaining the city of Seoul.   MacArthur listened, but sharpened his resolve to go forward.  After meeting with Truman on Midway Island, he now had the green light and the support from the White House and the Chiefs.   Time was of the essence as October was nigh and winter close on its heels.   The Marine generals had their work cut out for them.
Fortunately,  there were sufficient Navy vessels in WestPac to carry the Marines.  In Japan itself, MacArthur had enough resources to outfit a reinforced  infantry division.   Aviation assets were afloat  with the 7th Fleet; others ashore in Okinawa, and Japan(Iwakuni).   Talk of the possibility of a response from China was dismissed by MacArthur's staff as improbable.   The invasion went off as planned with hardly any unforeseen obstacles.   Within a few days, the Marine units were knocking on the doors of Seoul.   When they entered the outskirts of the city, the realities of urban warfare
surfaced once again: house-to-house fighting exacts a terrible toll on participants not to mention civilians caught in a crossfire.   While not general's preferred venue, it had to be done.  And it was.  Soon, the North Korean troops abandoned the city and fled north, toward the Manchurian border.  US forces followed close behind with the 8th US Army moving up the west coast, and the Marines in the central mountains on the main highway.  And then, it began to snow.
Winter campaigns throughout history make for interesting reading: what were the leaders thinking?  Gambling on fickle nature?  Disbelieving advisors and forecasters?  As temperatures dived,  everything began to slow down, almost to a halt.   A new calculation was in order; but MacArthur's Corps general, Lt. Gen. Almond, would not be deterred from his goal to reach the Yalu River on the border with Manchuria/China. As they moved north, the Marines struggled with terrain: deep ravines flanked by steep hills and mountains with only one road usable for transport.  Gen. Smith begged for more time and more support, but Gen. Almond would not listen.  The Marines pressed on, northward.  When they arrived near a hydroelectric dam at a place called Chosin, they stopped to assess the situation.   Within a couple of days, it became readily apparent, the PLA of China had crossed into Korea in huge numbers, bent on eradicating the Marine/US Army threat.  Game on.   The numbers of attacking troops seemed endless, and despite skill and energy backed up by able leadership, the Marines faced capture or annihilation or both.   Time to retreat.   It became one of the most storied retreats in military history:  1 division, surrounded and out numbered 5-1, in 20 degrees below zero weather, was able to  fight during the withdrawal bringing all casualties and equipment along with them.   Eventually, the Marines were able to reach Hungnam where they boarded transports that carried them south to Pusan where they could regroup and refit for the battle to come.
Hampton Sides is a great writer and a thorough historian.  His story exhibits considerable depth of research, covering the landscape of earlier histories, and adding to those with a number of personal survival stories.  He also did not omit the controversies attached to MacArthur's leadership role.   Despite his success at Inchon, his many mistakes and bold miscalculations eventually led to his dismissal by Harry Truman.   He was a great leader but had outlived his usefulness.   It was time to retire the old general.
Five Star rating *****

Weather Alert: Next Week-Snow

So, you asked for snow around Lake Tahoe?  Really?  It's winter, so here we are:  forecasters paint a white picture around El Dorado County and Placer County, predicting at least 5 days of snow fall of various amounts.   While not predicting huge amounts, it is said to be many days of light snowfall, continuously for the next week.
So: plans?  Adjust accordingly-1) adequate supplies of all necessities, 2)suitable foodstuffs on hand, 3) backup plans for the inevitable power outages, 4) communications equipment in order, 5) transportation available(fuel tank full), 6) fire wood close at hand, 7) cheap entertainment available(books, mags, CD's, movies, snowshoes, skis, warm clothes, hats, cheap booze, good wines, and maybe a friend to share the time with.
Pay attention, enjoy winter-we live at Tahoe for good reasons and the winters are some of them.
Mayor has spoken.

Poland Arrests Huawei Employee: Spying

Well, now we have another international incident involving Chinese electronic manufacturer Huawei.   Polish intelligence has arrested two employees of the company and have charged them with spying for China.  This comes at a time when Canada has arrested the funder's daughter at the request of the US DOJ on charges she violated sanctions imposed by the US against Iran.  And China retaliated by arresting 2 Canadians for unspecified charges.   And, the Chinese reopened a case involving an Australian who was sentenced to 15 years for smuggling and the prosecution says the sentence was too light.  Double jeopardy here?
All this amidst an intense trade war between the US and China, based on Chinese attempts and successes in stealing American trade secrets and proprietary property related most often to tech innovation and design.  In Poland, Huawei has established a manufacturing footprint that is certain to expand as the goal is to establish a presence in eastern Europe to access that EU market for Chinese products so the country can outflank American tech companies across the continent.  Needless to say, Huawei has not attempted to establish such facilities in Putin's Russyan area due to all of the Kremlin's business related shenanigans(ask Bill Browder).   Perhaps the latest charges against Huawei will filter back to the US DOJ and convince any skeptics that Huawei does the bidding of the PLA and Beijing(conjoined) and is really the commercial face of Beijing's attempts and acknowledged efforts to become the number 1 source of worldwide economic activity in the next 5-10 years.
     What now Mr. Trump?

Snow Storm January

Yes, it's winter.  Thousands of visitors to the Tahoe basin found out the hard way that keeping a weather eye pays dividends.  If one decides not to pay attention, things get a little dicey on Interstate 80 on the way down the mountain.  As the weekend came to an end, all the visitors who clamored up the hill for some powder skiing, turned their vehicles west on Highway 80- all at the same time.
Then Mother nature intervened: dumping huge amounts of powder across the foothills on both sides of the highway:  results- stopped traffic.  Results: long delays.  Results frustration.  Results: cursing.  Results battered mental states.  And then calTrans shut down the highway in both directions.
Results-even longer delays getting home to the Central Valley and the Left Coast.
Most of the inconvenience could have been avoided if only.  If only travelers had taken a few precautions:  leave earlier; leave later.  Carry chains/cables.  Fill up the gas tank.  Read weather reports-take weather into consideration: Hey, it's the Sierra-winter happens every year about this time, and it could care less about your schedule.
    Will they ever learn?

Book Review: Red Famine: Stalin's War Against Ukraine, Anne Appelbaum

The talented historian/writer has done it again.  Through her painstaking research, using newly discovered documents and broad based interviews, she has uncovered facts that tell a story that has been obscured by time and effort on the part of the perpetrators of the famine.

Russyan Attorney Indicted by US

Need a Scheme?  Call me-I can help-Natalya Veselnitskaya

Hi, need help getting elected?  Call me-I can help
It seems that the US/DOJ investigation, while moving forward at a steady pace, is spreading across a wide landscape.  The investigation into Pres. Trump's campaign organization and its operatives has revolved around the methods and moves of Paul Manafort, the convicted defendant  whose global work  has been revealed as interesting, given that he moved effortlessly among Russyans scattered hither and yon from Moscova to Kiev.  Now we have another personage involved who will be forced to defend herself against charges filed and unsealed by the DOJ.
Her name is Natalya Veselnitskaya.   She is charged with attempting to thwart an investigation into a tax-fraud scheme involving Russyan officials; an influential Russyan businessman(joke!), and an investment firm.   Her efforts were made to secretly work with a Russyan prosecutor(joke?) to draft a response by the Russyan government to U.S. investigators.   The company involved, Prevezon Holdings,  is alleged to have been a conduit for funds from a money laundering operation carried out by corrupt Russyan officials(oxymoron).
Ms. Veselnitskaya is a Russyan citizen and is believed to be hiding under a fur coat in a suburb of Moscova.  She was a participant in meetings in Trump Tower during the presidential campaign and is under investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller for her efforts with the campaign.   She is charged with 1 count of obstruction of Justice which carries up to a 10 year prison sentence.  That sentence could be served in the Gulag somewhere in Siberia, but that is unlikely since her health would prohibit living in a cold weather area, like Siberia.
Angel Melendez, the special-agent-in charge for the FBI, says that Ms. Natalya "secretly schemed to provide false information to U.S. law enforcement.

China Props Up Businesses as Economy Slows

In a move that signals government concerns about the slide in the nation's economy, China's central bank made some moves that could help to prevent further slowing down.  The move puts $218 billion into the economy which will allow banks to make more loans.  Additionally, the central bank relaxed rules on bank reserve amounts that will add to the amounts that banks can lend to borrowers wishing to expand production and or sales.   The nation's economic growth came in at 6.5% for the last 3 months of the year 2018.  Li Keqiang, the country's premier, said that these moves will shore up a slowing economy.
These moves come at a time of trade turbulence as US President Trump has indicated he will no longer tolerate China's aggressive efforts to steal US trade secrets, corporate proprietary information, US patents, manufacturing techniques, and research information located in university laboratories.  The PLA, the Chinese military organization-Peoples Liberation Army, has made it a top priority to steal technology any way possible, using tried and true espionage methods.
To further increase tensions, the Chinese Space Authority launched a lunar probe that successfully landed on the reverse surface of the moon yesterday.  While not the first lunar landing, it is the first to make this location a target. It landed in the center of a lunar crater 1500 miles wide. Efforts will be made to exploit this capability to by adding new information beyond the lunar site by establishing a telescope able to reach deep into space beyond Mars and our solar system.  The goal here is to surpass the US/Russyan efforts of the past 50 years.  China has made significant investments in space exploration capability.

Russya Spanked by USA

So, the World Junior Hockey Tournament, held in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on the west coast of North America, spitting distance to Seattle, Washington.  In what was billed as an easy win for the representatives from the largest country in the world, the USA team came into the contest with a determined attitude, ready to prove themselves against a perennal favorite from the Land Of Putin.   Fans were not disappointed.   The USA scored first on a goal by Oliver Wahkstrom, followed by a goal by teammate Alexander  Chmelevski.  Now the score read USA 2, Kremlinites 0.   Hmmmm.  Did the Russkies fail to show up with their A-Game?  Apparently so.
The USA scored their 2nd goal on a power play after the notorious tripper, Vitali Kravtsov was called for tripping and sent to the penalty box.   Later in the same period,  Petrov Denisenko  cored after racing down the boards to launch a shot over goalie Cayden Primeau who made 35 saves during the contest.   Spectators commented that the Kremlins' own played without heart, looking listless and uninspired.   No doubt they are concerned about the recent drop in the price of oil and events in Crimea and Ukraine which have drained the spirit of more than a few Muskovites.
The USA will face the winner of the game between Finland and Switzerland.

Apple Delivers Profit Warning

Apple spoke to investors today: expect slowing sales numbers.  The NY Stock Exchange promptly reacted in a negative manner: stocks slid almost 3% to continue a direction that began over 3 months ago and accelerated in December of 2018.  So, where are we going with the economy in 2019?  Time will tell and nobody really knows: who can accurately predict the future anyway?
The tech sector took it on the chin, with big players taking big hits.  This can mean that some pundits were correct saying that tech companies had out run profits and new product development.  Perhaps this has contributed to investors' concern of forward earnings.
In addition to the tech sector, the banking sector has more fallout from the Wells Fargo Bank situation.  A settlement was announced that would cost the bank $585 millions for retail customer activities including ID theft, insurance fraud, and loan irregularities.   Apparently, the California State Insurance commissioner has more investigations underway concerning the Bank, home based in San Francisco.  A consumer advocacy group says the Bank should be broken up and sold off as it is a criminal enterprise.  The Mayor of Tahoma agrees with this position.  This corporation, which raked in over $20 billions in profits last year, cannot be fixed.  It is rotten to the core and its leadership hides under the corporate immunity afforded these institutions and their leaders.  It is time to correct these laws when we have prisons filled with perps who stole mere thousands from various sources.  Why are bankers immune from criminal prosecution?  It's not right nor is it fair.
Regulators have to get real and recognize the insidious nature of large corporate structures that have evolved from once competitive markets to market-dominating monopolies.  The time is passed for the OCC and the Treasury Secretary to act.  Needless to say, when the Democratic presidential candidate inevitably wins in 2020, things will change in the financial and banking sectors.   Elizabeth Warren  is just one of many and she has the experience in the consumer protection zone.  Today, the House of Representatives elected former Speaker Nancy Pelosi to be its current Speaker.  While she will focus on dealings with Pres. Trump, she will hear from all over the country to rein in banking and finance.  Both sectors deserve the attention of Congress.

Happy New Year: 2019

New numbers will be required on all documents: 2019, instead of 2018.  How long does it take for that change to be recognized and put into use?  A week?  A month?  Depends: how many times does one communicate using dates?  It's not like the olden days when people actually wrote stuff.  Now, it's different;  who dates their emails?  Who puts a salutation to an email?  Not many.  Hence, it will take awhile before it's common practice to write the new number; 2019.
Elizabeth Warren, the US Senator has announced the formation of a committee to explore a run for the White House next year, 2020.  She's the first of many Democrats who see the sitting presidential office holder as extremely vulnerable to an electorate that finds him not only repulsive, but dangerous.
But let us not dwell on politics so early into the new year.  The weather is terrific at Lake Tahoe- cold, sunny, and almost without a breeze-perfect ski conditions for funseekers here in the Basin to enjoy the holiday.
Be careful driving, which is the most hazardous part of your ski vacation.  Take your time, keep an eye on the weather, and enjoy our environment as much as possible.
Happy New Year from all of Tahoma.

Der Spiegel: Purveyor of Fake News

The old timey German rag, Der Spiegel, has been exposed as a purveyor of fake news.  In a widely reported scandal, one of its journalists published a story on an American town which was an entire fabrication created to highlight the political viewpoint of the writer.  The only part he got right was the identity of the place: Fergus Falls, MI.  How does this happen in the age of the internet?  How does a writer think that he will not be found out?   How does a foreign correspondent enter an obscure place and create an imaginary replacement for what he has observed?  Obviously, the man has severe psychological problems, but it might go deeper than psychology.  Perhaps it's a reflection of the German soul.  Could it be a modern attitude toward America?
The readers of Der Spiegel no doubt consider themselves urbane, educated, cosmopolitan, and modern Germans.  They know their past; they know the efforts made to own that past; and they know America-or so they thought.   After 8 years of the Obama administration, most Germans expected a Clinton redux in the White House.   That didn't happen; an unknown happened, and it upset the European population, not least the German population.   What will happen now, they thought?  Angela was having issues, especially after the Brexit vote in the UK.  Enter a rogue journalist with an agenda.
Klass Relotius, 33, has been a staff correspondent for the venerable magazine for years, filing stories thought to be gathered by field work on the scene of the subject story line.  Richard Grennell, the US Ambassador to Germany, wrote a letter last week to the editors of Der Spiegel admonishing the magazine for failing to consult with the Embassy before printing stories about America.  The fact checking department of the magazine has also come under criticism for not only approving of the Fergus Falls story, but others related to activities on the US/Mexico border, and a story that included statements from a 99-year old Nazi death camp survivor living in the US.   The reporter/journalist has made few statements since the revelation of his phony writing was made public.
On Monday, the magazine management announced that it will file criminal complaints against Relotius and seek redress for his nefarious actions.   Apparently, he is not the only culprit at the magazine.  Other writers' work is being scrutinized for truth, clarity, and honest reportage that may have been approved by the fact checkers in house.  People in Hanover, Germany, apparently, have taken the news to heart, expressing dismay at the evidence that has tarnished not only the magazine, but all those associated with its publication, including its readers.   The repercussions will be ongoing, causing suspicions of all German journalism.
This will cause European journalists to rethink their positions on American politics as reported for the Euro zone.   Keep an eye on the continuing story as it unfolds: there's more coming.

Putin: The Answer MAN.

It's that time of the year folks: Czar Putin goes on the airwaves to talk at his people and answer their many questions to the best ...
