California's US Senator, Diane Feinstein, is confined at home in San Francisco recovering from a bout of shingles, that nasty systemic disease that is very, very painful and is almost impossible to cure quickly. She is a ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee among others. She stated that she has asked Sen. C. Schumer to name a temporary democratic replacement while she is recovering at home and is unable to travel to assume her duties.
California representative in the House, Ro Khanna, has asked publicly that she resign so a replacement can be named immediately while President Biden is in the White House and Democrats hold a majority in the Senate. While the Senator has announced she will not run again, she has not indicated any idea of resigning before her term is up in several years. (She is 89 years old).
Several California politicians have entered the race to replace her at the next election. Adam Shiff is one, Barbara Lee is another. Sen. Feinstein has served for over 30 years, beginning her local career almost 50 years ago as a member of the City's Board of Supervisors.
