Africa: Now, Sudan. Again

Civil ar has broken out, again, in Sudan between military factions vying for control of this east African nation of 40 million citizens. Army units under the control of the 2 rival generals are fighting in the capitol of Khartum as civilians run for cover. Despite efforts to prevent violence, the conflict began to rage in the open yesterday. Photos indicate shelling of sections of the city with heavy smoke rising from fires started by shelling buildings near government centers.

Since the military takeover 2 years ago, an uneasy truce has been observed. Now the split between the opposing generals has become acute with the obvious results: armed conflict out in the open.

Will we see the Blue berets of the UN soon? Not for awhile. In the meantime, the innocent civilians duck and run for cover.
