A bicyclist was fatally injured yesterday in the Presidio of San Francisco, the former military base converted to a quasi-park, with market rate housing, commercial office space, and a world class setting that includes the Golden Gate Bridge. Its winding roads, waterfront areas, and golf course offer stunning views of the Bay and the Marin Hills to the north. It also functions as a pass through for Highway 101 and Highway 1, bringing substantial traffic on a daily basis. As a destination for tourists and locals alike to enjoy its many benefits, the Presidio attractions draw a wide mix of visitors, including bicyclists of all stripes. This recent fatality involving a cyclist is a bit different. The victim was a world class cyclist, well known, and admired for his many victories on an indoor track. Hence, his road riding skills were less than the best. And perhaps he assumed drivers in San Francisco, the progressive bastion on the coast, were an aware group, respectful of those who choose pedal power rather than horsepower.
Now, he is history: another statistic, another life cut short, a grim reminder for all who choose pedal power in San Francisco. Be aware; beware. The City That Knows How doesn't care.
