Meanwhile, back in China, there are folks who have a different kind of wonder. They wonder what happened to the journalists who wrote about the coronavirus as it began its cascade through the region of 60 million citizens. Other EU countries failed to respond to Italy's request for immediate aid in the form of masks and ventilators. China responded, perhaps as an answer to Italy's shipping 2 tons of emergency supplies. The Chinese Embassy tweeted that China remembers Italy's gesture months ago. (have others forgotten that it was China that sat on the information related to the outbreak that spread over the world?). Such help must be observed with a wary eye. Now that it appears the spread of the virus has been restrained and no new cases have been reported in the last 2 days, Chinese equipment manufacturers are trying to gain market share across Europe. Recall that Chinese doctor Li Wenliang warned his colleagues that there was a possibles SARS -like virus in some Wuhan citizens. He was reprimanded for spreading rumors. The government has since rescinded the reprimand, but too late for Dr. Li who died of the virus in February.
Recently, journalist Xu Zhiyong, a journalist, was jailed for "subversion" after criticizing the government's response to the outbreak. Later, Li Xehua, a former journalist for TV network CCTV, has disappeared. Not a good thing among Chinese people. Two other journalists are also missing/disappeared: Fang Bin and Chen Quishi. Other western journalists who tried to bring attention to the outbreak have been expelled from the country.
So, call it what you will, but the Chinese propaganda machine will attempt to sway public opinion in its favor as the world suffers the effects of the Communist regime's attempts to cover up yet another viral epidemic in its own country and now the world.
