This was only the second time that a visiting team defeated the Celtics on their home court in front of a rabid crowd of faithful fans. Those fans were excited to be in attendance and for the first few minutes, when Boston went ahead 12-2, they thought for sure last night would bring the series even. It was not to be. By the end of that first quarter, the Dubbs clearly had come to play for keeps. By half time, it was clear to any observer that San Francisco was the dominate team in all areas, especially defense. Boston began to turn the ball over, a clear sign of troubles ahead. The Warrior defense had jelled into a formidable obstacle that the Celts could not play against with any hope of securing a positive outcome.
Watching Curry, Draymond, and Wiggs knock the ball away was a lesson in aggressive moves to stymie offense. Draymond Green had a great night- a double double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, not to mention blocks and steals. Curry continued to awe the fans with his magic, scoring 43 points on the night and earning MVP honors when the game ended. Perhaps the win would have been sweeter at home, but sometimes one thinks that an away victory is the sweetest victory: vanquishing a foe at home where odds favor the home team.
So, the Warriors have their 4th championship in 8 years, and it did not come easily. The early going in the season had its ups and downs; they did not appear to be a team destined for the finals. But, late in the season, they formed new connections and overcame various injuries, lapses in play, and above all, improved defense. Yes, 3 pointers are impressive, but solid defense wins the day. See above.
Boston shows future possibilities: wait until next year.
Congratulations to the Warriors.
