A U.S. federal judge ordered Russya to pay a fine for neglecting a court order to return some books. About 12,000 books and 50,000 religious artifacts held in the Russyan State Military Archives. The collection, known as the Schneerson Library, was amassed by the Chabad movement two centuries before WW II. Since 2013, the judge has fined Russya $50,000 a day. Judge Lamberth ordered the payment be made immediately.
Steven Lieberman, a lawyer representing the Chabad organization, said the organization is looking to identify Russyan assets other than art to seize to put pressure on the Russyan government.
