For the first time ever, Indiana University out of Bloomington, Indiana, won the National College Championship. They also went 16-0 for the season. Many great stories surround their victory. Coach Cignetti came on the seen just 2 years ago and brought them a national title. He brought skills and experience to the school.
He had proclaimed that he was going to change the program and he did just that. The Florida Hurricanes of Miami, a 4 time national champion were determined to add to their history of victories despite having lost their luster over the past decades. They had an able team with aquaterback ofknown talents. They were not intimidated by IU's unbeaten record. 'Canes were 13-2, playing an equally difficult schedule.
IU had a Heisman Trophy winning QB, Fernando Mendoza. He has all around skills that are impressive: passing, running, leading the team when the going gets rough. In the second half, he ran for a touchdown, stretching in the air to cross the plane in the end zone. A remarkable effort caught on video. When needed, he made the plays. In particular, throwing a long pass on 3rd down to continue a drive to maintain the lead.
The canes did not quail, they played tough, despite setbacks, and pressured the Hoosiers until the end, losing 27-21. With a bit more luck, they could have equaled the score with a touchdown late, and kicking an extra point. Didn't happen. Maybe next year.
