What? A northern European marathon winner? Yes, folks, it's true. Even though the women's winner was an African woman, this year's NYC winner was a paleface, or, white man if you please. HAs the spell of African men been broken? Hard to say, but this years winner fits the average distance runners' profile:
He's had some success in the recent past. He's in that age bracket ot top runners: early 30's. He has the right body type: tall and slender. He is healthy by all measures-mentally and physically. He said afterwards that he decided on NYC despite not being a flat course as found in Chicage and other sites; but he wanted a course that was challenging and well organized. He got his wish and added another victory to his resume.
The winner was Andreas Almgren, 31 years old. past success included a Bronze Medal in 10,000 meters in Tokyo in 2021; in September, he won a half marathon at World Road Running Championships in 58:06 one of the 10 fastest time in history. He took gold in the 10,000 at the European Championships in august, shattering a record that stood for 48 years(1978). He is not new to the track.
Sheila Chepkirui won the women's race for Kenya -her 2nd win, she also won in 2024.
Well done,
